Transversely Loaded Piles

BS 8004:1986 gives a unique insight of the various causes of lateral strength high enough to damage a
pile and affect its structural performance in section 7.3.3.4. It also relates the general relationship ( 7.3.3)
between the strength of a pile work particularly made of reinforced or prestressed concrete and its ability
to withstand any induced transverse load. While BS 8004:1986 focuses on the theoretical aspect,
Eurocode 7 aims more at the design of piles subjected to the lateral loading condition during driving,
installation or when performed in section 7.7.1. It specifies that transverse loading should be evaluated by
considering the interaction between piles (treated as stiff or flexible beams) and the moving soil mass.
