PUBLIC SPEAKING

OVERVIEW
PUBLIC SPEAKING IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK GOOD IN FRONT OF PEOPLE. ALL
YOUR LIFE YOUR SPEECH WILL HELP YOU OR HINDER YOU. YOU SPEAK MORE
OFTEN THAN YOU WRITE; INDEED, SPEAKING IS MORE COMMON THAN ALL OTHER
FORMS OF COMMUNICATION PUT TOGETHER. SO THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS
COURSE IS TO GET PEOPLE SPEAKING IN FRONT OF GROUPS WITH MORE EASE AND
STYLE. IN THIS COURSE THE STUDENT WILL HAVE MANY SPEAKING EXPERIENCES
AND SHOULD, THEREFORE, EXHIBIT A GREAT DEAL OF IMPROVEMENT.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
BY THE END OF THE COURSE EACH STUDENT:
1. WILL DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF
SPEECHES BY GIVING SPECIFIC TYPES OF SPEECHES.
2. WILL DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF SPEECH ORGANIZATION AND
OUTLINING BY OUTLINING EACH PRESENTATION IN ACCORD WITH
ORGANIZING A SPEECH: A PROGRAMMED GUIDE BY JUDY HAYNES.
3. WILL DEMONSTRATE AN ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE SPEECHES BY
DOING SO.
4. WILL DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING AND ABILITY TO EMPLOY THE
FOLLOWING DELIVERY TECHNIQUES:

6. WILL DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF CRITICISM BY OVERCOMING
SPEAKING "PROBLEMS AND BY IMPLEMENTING SUGGESTIONS IN
ENSUING SPEAKING EXPERIENCES.

CLASS PROCEDURES:
1. A TYPED OUTLINE MUST BE PLACED ON THE FRONT DESK FOR EACH SPEECH
ON THE DAY THE SPEECH IS TO BE GIVEN. AN OUTLINE MAY HAVE NO LESS
THAN SEVEN POINTS. SPEECHES MAY NOT BE GIVEN WITHOUT A TYPED
OUTLINE. OUTLINES TURNED IN AT THE END OF CLASS (IN THE LAST 15
MINS.) ARE MAKEUP SPEECHES.
2. EACH STUDENT SHALL AGREE UPON SIX SPEAKING DATES. ONCE THESE
DATES ARE SET STUDENTS SHOULD NOT CHANGE THESE SPEAKING DATES.
ONLY ONE SPEECH MAY BE GIVEN "OFF SCHEDULE" (EARLY OR LATE). THIS
SPEECH OUTLINE WILL GO INTO THE MAKE-UP STACK AND WILL BE GIVEN AS
TIME BECOMES AVAILABLE.
3. SPEAKERS WILL BE SIGNALED WHEN THEY REACH THE TIME LIMIT.
SPEECHES THAT RUN 1 MIN. OVERTIME WILL BE "CUT OFF". NO EXCEPTIONS
4. IF A STUDENT WISHES TO USE AN OUTLINE WHILE HE IS SPEAKING, HE MAY
DO SO FOR THE INFORMATIVE, PERSUASIVE, AND THE "THIS I BELIEVE"
SPEECHES. IF A STUDENT DOES USE AN OUTLINE HE WILL NEED ONE FOR
HIMSELF AND ONE FOR THE INSTRUCTOR.
5. EIGHTY PERCENT OF EACH SPEECH SHOULD BE LIVE SPOKEN WORDS. WHILE
RECORDED SOUND AND FILM ARE VERY EFFECTIVE, THEY MAY NOT BE THE
MAIN SOURCE OF YOUR PRESENTATION. LIVE NARRATION OF THE SOUND OR
FILM CAN BE AN EXCITING SOLUTION.

6. DAY CLASS ATTENDANCE


FIVE ABSENCES WILL BE ALLOWED FOR FIELD TRIPS IN OTHER CLASSES, DR.
APPOINTMENTS, AND UNAVOIDABLE EMERGENCIES. AFTER THE FIFTH
ABSENCE A STUDENT WILL LOOSE 25 POINTS. 100 POINTS WILL BE
DEDUCTED FOR EACH ADDITIONAL FIVE ABSENCES (ON THE 10TH, 15TH ETC.).
NIGHT CLASS ATTENDANCE (ALL SUMMER CLASSSES)
TWO ABSENCES WILL BE ALLOWED FOR FIELD TRIPS IN OTHER CLASSES, DR.
APPOINTMENTS, AND UNAVOIDABLE EMERGENCIES. AFTER THE SECOND
ABSENCE A STUDENT WILL LOOSE 25 POINTS. 100 POINTS WILL BE
DEDUCTED FOR EACH ADDITIONAL TWO ABSENCES (ON THE 4TH, 6TH ETC.).
7. MORE THAN 15 MINUTES MISSED FROM A SINGLE CLASS IN THE BEGINNING,
MIDDLE OR END OF A CLASS CONSTITUTES AN ABSENCE. YOU MAY NOT
WALK IN DURING A SPEECH BUT STAND AT THE DOOR WERE YOU CAN BE
SEEN.
8. IF YOU ARE TARDY (LESS THEN 15 MINUTES AT THE BEGINNING, MIDDLE OR
END OF CLASS) ALWAYS NOTIFY THE INSTRUCTOR THAT DAY, BUT AFTER
CLASS ONLY. FIVE TARDIES WILL BE ALLOWED (TWO IN THE NIGHT AND
SUMMER CLASS). ANY TARDY AFTER THESE WILL BE AN ABSENCE.
9. VISUAL AIDS MAY BE USED FOR THE DEMONSTRATION, HIGH-TECH,
ENTERTAINMENT, AND "I BELIEVE" SPEECHES ONLY.
10. LATE SPEECHES MUST BE TURNED IN AND MADE UP BEFORE THE LAST
SPEECH IS DUE.
11. IF YOU NEED SPECIAL HELP SEE ME IN MY OFFICE IN R213 DURING
OFFICE HOURS OR BY APPOINTMENT, OR FEEL FREE TO CALL MY OFFICE. I
WILL BE GLAD TO HELP.
12. YOU MAY NOT HAVE OPEN WRITTEN MATERIALS, OR BE GENERALLY
DISRUPTIVE IN CLASS. YOU WILL BE GIVEN ONE WARNING PER DAY AND
THEN ASKED TO LEAVE. THIS WILL BE AN ABSENCE.
13. PHOTOGRAPHS AND RECORDINGS OF ANY TYPE TAKEN WITH CELL PHONES
OR ANY OTHER DEVISE MAY BE TAKEN ONLY WITH THE PERMISSION OF BOTH
THE SPEAKER AND THE INSTRUCTOR.
14. NO PHONES, LAPTOPS, IPODS, MP3 PLAYERS, HEAD PHONES,
BLUETOOTH HEADSETS OR OTHER MEDIA DEVICES MAY BE ON YOUR DESK,
LAP, HEAD, EARS, SHOULDERS, VIEWABLE OR IN USE, OR THE APPEARANCE
OF SUCH DEVICE IN USE. REMOVE ALL BAGS FROM YOUR DESK. YOU WILL
BE GIVEN ONE WARNING, THAN ASKED TO LEAVE THE CLASS. THIS WILL BE
AN ABSENCE. AS A PUBLIC SPEAKING CLASS YOUR FOCUS SHOULD BE ON
THE SPEAKER.

15. IF YOU HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS PLEASE LET ME KNOW ON THE FIRST DAY OF
CLASS.
16. STUDENTS WHO FAIL TO ATTEND THE FIRST THREE HOURS OF INSTRUCTION
WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS.
17. YOU CAN REQUEST TO BE IN ANY SPEAKING GROUP FOR THE QUARTER
DURING THE FIRST WEEK. AFTER THE FIRST WEEK YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE
TO CHANGE THIS SPEAKING GROUP. CHECK YOUR PROFESSIONAL
SCHEDULE SO YOU CAN BE PLACED IN A SPEAKING GROUP THAT DOES NOT
SPEAK ON THE SAME DAYS AS YOUR PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENTS. IF YOU
ARE IN THE NATIONAL GUARD YOUR GUARD DUTY SCHEDULE IS POSTED A
YEAR IN ADVANCE.
18. IT IS A REQUIREMENT OF THIS CLASS TO HAVE FUN.

THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS SPEECH IS TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING YOU KNOW
SOMETHING ABOUT. PICK A TOPIC YOU REALLY LIKE. PICK A TOPIC THAT IS
REALLY YOU. LET YOUR NATURAL ENTHUSIASM COME THROUGH. DON'T TRY TO
MAKE FALSE IMPRESSIONS THAT YOU THINK WILL IMPRESS OTHERS. BE

PERSUASIVE SPEECH
IN THIS SPEECH YOU WILL WANT TO DO ONE OF THREE THINGS: 1. GET YOUR
AUDIENCE TO CHANGE THE WAY THEY THINK ABOUT SOMETHING, 2. GET YOUR
AUDIENCE TO DO SOMETHING, OR 3. REINFORCE IDEAS YOUR AUDIENCE ALREADY
HOLDS ABOUT SOMETHING. PICK A TOPIC YOU REALLY FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT.
TAKE TIME TO THINK ABOUT WHY YOU FEEL THIS WAY. DEVELOP REAL
CONVICTION.

DEMONSTRATION SPEECH
THE MAIN PURPOSE IN THIS SPEECH IS TO GIVE A SPEECH WITH THE AID OF AN
OBJECT. YOU SHOULD GET INVOLVED WITH YOU OBJECT, NOT JUST, "SHOW AND
TELL". THIS INCLUDES POSTERS AND THE BLACK BOARD. THIS IS A GREAT TIME IN
THE CLASS TO START ADDING CREATIVE IDEAS AND TECHNIQUES EACH TIME YOU
PRACTICE. MAKE IT A CHALLENGING GAME TO SEE JUST HOW CREATIVE YOU CAN
GET. SPEECH REALLY CAN BE FUN! YOU MAY NOT USE THE COMPUTER, TABLE
CAMERA, ARE ANY HI TECH DEVICE FOR THIS SPEECH. THAT COMES IN THE NEXT
SPEECH.

"HI TECH."
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS SPEECH IS TO USE SOME FORM OF "CUTTING EDGE
TECHNICAL" TO AID YOUR SPEECH. THE POINT HERE IS NOT TO TALK ABOUT
TECHNOLOGY BUT TO USE TECHNOLOGY AS AN AID TO COMMUNICATION.
SOME SUGGESTIONS ARE:
1. GIVE A SPEECH WITH THE AID OF MUSIC OR SOUND EFFECTS USING AN IPOD.
2. TALK US THROUGH A SITUATION OR EVENT USING RECORDED VIDEO YOU HAVE
FILMED OR VIDEO FROM YOUTUBE.
4. GIVE A PRESENTATION WITH THE AID OF A COMPUTER USING "POWER POINT".
5. GIVE A SPEECH WITH YOUR LAPTOP OR IPAD CONNECTED TO THE PROJECTOR.
6. USING YOUR CELL PHONE TO TALK TO SOMEONE ON SPEAKER PHONE IS A
GREAT IDEA, BUT JUST TALKING ABOUT YOUR CELL PHONE WILL NOT
BE ACCEPTED.

ENTERTAINMENT SPEECH
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS SPEECH IS FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR AUDIENCE TO
FEEL BETTER BECAUSE YOU GOT UP TO SPEAK. THIS SPEECH DOES NOT HAVE TO
BE A "ROLLING IN THE ISLES FUNNY" TYPE OF PRESENTATION, THOUGH IT CAN BE.
CHOOSE A TOPIC THAT YOU CAN REALLY "GET INTO" AND FORGET ABOUT
YOURSELF. HAVE FUN.

"THIS I BELIEVE"
IN THIS SPEECH YOU WILL BE SPEAKING ABOUT SOMETHING YOU BELIEVE IN SO
STRONGLY IT CAUSES YOU TO MOVE A DIRECTION IN YOUR LIFE. TAKE TIME TO
