Formal Evaluation
Students will be formally evaluated at the end of the
unit.
Informal Evaluation
Students will be informally evaluated based on their
participation in the activity.

The students will be able to show teen numbers as a

Daily Math Routine On Mimeo:

Write out equations for 99 days in school (1+98=99,
98+1=99, 99=1+98)
Name numbers just before and after 99
Express 99 in tens and ones
99 is odd
Count 99 in money (nickels grouped into 10s and
pennies)
Review various times to the hour - show on Judy clock
Whole Group Instruction (Pages 414-417 in T.M.)
1. See anticipatory set above.
2. Have students practice writing teen numbers on
whiteboards as tens and ones starting with the number
11.
3. Have students write the equation for each of these
numbers in the form of 10 + underneath their tens
and ones drawing.
4. Discuss any patterns that students may have seen
when drawing the teen numbers as tens and ones.
Possible answers may include:
Teen numbers have one tens stick.
Each additional number had one more cube than
the number before it.
The number in the ones place matches the
amount of ones drawn.
The number in the tens place matches the number
of tens sticks drawn.
5. Show two equations cards and ask what is different
between them. Point out that in one card, the teen
number is first and in the other it is last.
6. Explain to students the meaning behind and
placement of + and = signs.
7. Explain that we can write questions with the total
either first or last (and the partners on the other side of
the equal sign), and it is correct.
8. Finger wiggles for partners of 2-6.
9. Teen Number Heart Addition Worksheet Students will
draw teen numbers as tens and ones. The tens will go
on the first heart in the worksheet and the ones as the
second number. The number students will draw in the
hearts will be chosen by a spinner.
Adaptations/Accommodations for Students with Special Needs

Summary & Review of the Learning
Ask students if there is anything they noticed about the
teen numbers while they were working.
Responses may vary, but should be something
such as they all start with a one, they are all
ten + something,
