Make links between the distribution of animals

and plants to differences in environmental
factors
MOST:
Describe how organisms adapt to
changes in seasons/ environment.
Identify similarities and differences between
organisms of the same species.
SOME: Use some keywords to describe how
evolution takes place

Differentiated Outcomes:
ALL: Travel around the Galapagos islands and
investigate. Draw finch beaks using food source on
the island
MOST: Recognise that the beak shapes are varied
on different islands depending on the type of food
available
SOME: Explain using keywords given how the beak
shapes have evolved over the years

ENTRANCE ACTIVITY:- Show students a 10

note and ask them who is this man? Explain
to students that Darwin was a scientist who
created the theory of evolution.

Students come into lesson, collect their books and

then can think about who this man is. Get some
feedback.

STARTER ACTIVITY

STUDENTS
QUESTIONS

What is evolution?
Show them the evolution of Homer Simpson
video and let them think in groups about what
evolution is
Evolution is how plants and animals have
adapted to survive in their environment over
many years. This may mean that the way
they look or behave has changed to help
them suit their environment better.
Explain basics of Darwins theory of evolution

Why are some changes so drastic e.g change in colour of
animal

MAIN ACTIVITY
We will follow in the footsteps of Charles
Darwin today and travel around 4 of the
Galapagos islands. He noticed that there was
a type of bird called a finch and on each
island their beak shapes were different
depending on the type of food that they eat.

3.fernandino

small fruit

Students complete practical and fill in sheet.

Try to draw what their beak may look like.
Give answers on PowerPoint. Assess as I am
going around room

G + T TABLE There will questions and a task for

those who finish. They will have to use plasticine
to design a beak shape for a finch that drinks
sap through
tree bark and other thought
provoking questions

Use the words around board to explain

how the finch evolved
1. Variation in species
2. Far too many young are produced so there
is a competition for food water and those
best adapted will survive survival of the
fittest
3. Those that survive pass on genes (in
nucleus)
4. Over millions of years it may lead to a new
species. Less adapted may become extinct

(Sometimes mutations change in the DNA can

occurcan be advantage or disadvantage)

Plenary:Play the evolution of a blob game use

keywords around the board
Pass the parcel true and false activity

Students participate in blob game

True and false statements in a box then box moves

around room until i say stop. Student to read out true and
false and students respond with thumbs up or thumbs
down

HOMEWORK: To be collected in on Friday what conditions do woodlice live in

Differentiation strategies:
G&T
These students to design out of plasticine a
beak best suited to drinking sap inside of a
tree bark...
