environment in different ways and that adaptations may lead to evolution

Access to internet
Group activities:
Adult-led:
Work through some experiments like Mendels together by planting & crossing peas with different
features online at http://www2.edc.org/weblabs/mendel/mendel.html. At each point get a consensus
from the children before proceeding. Children may wish to try this in pairs afterwards.
Adult led:
Work together on the evolution game at http://www.sciencechannel.com/games-andinteractives/charles-darwin-game.htm before giving children the opportunity to have a go in pairs. If
children find it difficult suggest they try the monster game at
http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/society/schools/keystage1-2/darwin.aspx instead.
Independent:
Children can play a simple game about Darwins finches the shape of their beaks, at
http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/society/schools/keystage1-2/darwin.aspx.
Independent:
Children write a fact file about Darwin, Wallace or Mendel. They research using books &/or the
internet.
Plenary:
Display the fact files that children have produced & give children the opportunity to tell the class what
they discovered. Discuss how the investigations and thinking of many scientists can be brought
together to clarify scientific ideas. Scientists all over the world still work together/co-operate to
establish new theories today.

I can:
1. Explain both Wallaces and Darwins contribution to the theory of natural selection.
2. Give a simple explanation of Mendels pea experiments and his contribution to the understanding
of evolution.
