Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Allotted time: (5 minutes)

Hello everybody, I hope you all are having a great day. Before todays lesson, I want you all to think about some
leaders in your life. Teachers, bosses, coaches, pastors, or anybody who is in a leadership role. Think if that person is a
good leader or a bad leader. What kind of qualities did that person have? Then after you do that individually, Id like for
you all to go over the page with the pictures for a few minutes individually and decide whether the following people were
good, effective leaders or not. Then we will discuss your answers and an explanation of why or why not.
Now that youve had a few minutes to look over those leaders, Id love to hear what youre opinions are and
why. Would anybody like to answer to the first picture? (If nobody volunteers, choose a student). And why do you feel
that that leader was a good or bad leader? Would anybody like to answer to the second picture? (If nobody volunteers,
choose a student). And why do you feel that that leader was a good or bad leader? Awesome, I appreciate and like all of
your answers. Now that we have discussed some famous leaders, lets talk about leadership and some important
characteristics that make an effective leader.
Learning activities/procedures:

Allotted time: (40 minutes)

LECTURE/CLASS DISCUSSION
(*Pull up the PowerPoint presentation) Phillip, will you read the definition of leader and leadership? Thank you
Phillip. Anyone who holds some sort of responsibility in an organization or business must have a number of qualities to
reach his or her responsibilities or goals successfully. According to our textbook, here are some common traits of
leadership: (show common leadership traits slide). Now that we have discussed some common characteristics of a leader,
get together in groups of three to four, and come up with 5 of the best characteristics that you think make up the most
effective leaders. The 5 characteristics do not have to come from the list we just discussed. And then each group will write
their 5 on a poster and share them to the class. Ill give you about 4 minutes to come up with your 5 characteristics. Ask
groups to share what their most important characteristics were. Those were all great characteristics that you came up
with. Lets decide as a class what the top 5 are out of all of your suggestions and that will be the 5 characteristics that will
be on your test.
Leaders are continually interacting with employees and other managers, customers, and others who have interest
in the work of business. Because of these interactions, leaders need human relations skills. There are several important
skills that leaders can obtain to have good human relations. However, we are only going to discuss 5. These important
skills include: (1) self-understanding, (2) understanding others, (3) communication, (4) team building, and (5) developing
job satisfaction. Have students explain their understanding of each of the skills and why these skills are important in
relations to human relations.
Hopefully we all gained great insight on important characteristics of effective leaders and human relation skills
that leaders should have. Now we will talk about different types of leadership styles these leaders use and their
effectiveness. Leadership styles include the way a leader gives directions, handles problems, and makes decisions. A

leaders style is influenced by factors such as experiences, beliefs, and leaders preparation. There are 4 different styles
that we will be introduced to today. The first style is autocratic leadership. An autocratic leader gives direct, clear, and
precise orders with detailed instructions as to what, when, and how work is to be done. Efficiency is one of the main
reasons in using this style. Leaders or managers want work done the exact way they say to do it.
Learning activities/procedures (cont.):
This type of leadership doesnt help prepare employees for leadership roles due to a lack of decision making. Employees
do not gain experience or confidence in decision making or problem solving. Another style of leadership is democratic
leadership. A democratic leader is one who encourages workers to share in making decisions about their work & workrelated problems. This style is very self explanatory. Involvement in decision making or just the overall operation of
keeping the business alive helps make employees feel apart of a team aiming to reach the common goals of the
business. A leadership style that is opposite to the autocratic style of leadership is Open Leadership. Open leadership
gives little or no direction to employees. Employees are expected to understand the work that needs to be done, and
methods, details, and decisions are left to individual employees or teams. This style works best with experienced workers
in that field of work. Inexperienced employees are likely to be ineffective because they lack confidence in their abilities.
The last and most effective leadership style is situational leadership. Situational leadership understands employees and
job requirements and matches actions and decisions to the circumstances. This is the most effective style of leadership
because the leader bases decisions on the situation and where his or her employees are in terms of experience and
confidence. Now lets get in 4 groups. Each group will act out a different style of leadership in front of the class.
Within leadership styles, there are set of rules or guidelines that help the business or organization run efficiently
and as smooth as possible. Michael, would you mind reading the definition of rules for the class? Thank you Michael.
Companies develop work rules to identify expected behaviors. There are then a unique set of rules that are developed
because of safety issues, unique work responsibilities or schedules, or the needs of confidentiality and security when
handling information. Rules provide for structure and organization throughout businesses. How rules are enforced is also
a very important factor in leading (Show Figure 3-4 slide on PowerPoint). Here is a guideline for enforcing rules within
the work place.
Closure/Review of Content:

Allotted time: (3 minutes)

That is it for today. Hopefully each of you gained an understanding of leadership and human relation skills, the
different styles of leadership, and the importance of rules and their enforcement. Tomorrow we will review the material
we went over today and then take a quiz after the review to see how much each of you learned. Also, we will go over
analyzing and planning tomorrow as we continue our unit. Does anybody have any questions about today or anything in
general about class? (Answer any questions). I look forward to seeing yall again tomorrow and seeing how much you
learned. I hope you all have a great rest of your day.
Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Allotted time: (2 minutes)

My assessment of student learning will be through the skit the students will present after we discuss the different
styles of leadership. Also, I will assess them on the next day by having a short little quiz reflecting on the key points we
discussed the day before in class. I will ask questions such as which of the following is not an important human relation
we discussed, and what are the 4 leadership styles? This quiz will be graded and we will go over it as a class so that the
students can know what they missed and why they missed them. This hopefully helps them when they take the unit
exams. This is my way of making sure that the students understood the material presented and how some of their
discussion with classmates will help them when they are being assessed.

Modifications for exceptional learners:

I let the students decide on who they wanted to be in a group with as long as it was relatively close to where they
were sitting for their discussion on leadership characteristics. I could modify this lesson by choosing the groups in order to
promote social skills and working with people students may not be familiar with. This gives an opportunity for students to
get to know each other outside of their potential cliques. I could also modify my lesson by grouping students myself.
This technique would allow me to place lower-achieving students with higher-achieving students. This also can apply to
ESL students. This would allow the higher-achieving students to help the lower-achieving students or ESL students in
their characteristics presentation and the skit.
