Quebec City and French Verbs Ending in ER


French Level 1 Grades 9-12
Model Implemented: STAD
Estimated Time: Day one of three days.
Day one: 45 minutes
Objectives:

The students will know the history, natural resources and government of Quebec.

They will be able to conjugate the er verbs.

State Standards:

Locating major countries, cities, and geographical features of places where the
target language is spoken.

Read aloud proverbs, short poems, and songs in the target language with
appropriate pronunciation and intonation.

Present oral and written information in the target language using familiar
vocabulary and correct structure in the present time frame.

Materials:

Skit - Asterix at the Battle of Quebec

Overhead projector

Power Point of Quebec

Group work instructions

Quiz on er verbs

Procedures:
Introduction: I will introduce the Skit, Quebec, and inform them that we will be working on er
verbs. I will explain how the group work will be executed and allow them to ask questions on
anything they need clarification on.
o The Lesson: starts out with a skit on Asterix at the Battle of Quebec. A group of
students perform using the skit which incorporates introductions in French food
phrases and the verb tre. Following the skit I will present the power point on
Quebec. Then I will give the lesson on er verbs.
o A review will be covered on Quebec and er verbs. Then there will be a question
time for the students.
Group Work:
o The students will be split up into groups of four and practice conjugating the specific
verbs covered. After seven minutes of practice each person will be given a quiz on
the verbs. Quizzes are handed in.
Assessment:
The teacher and I will grade the quizzes and award bonus points to each student
accordingly.


French Skit
Astrix and the Battle of 1759-The French and Indian War
Background- It is the year 1759 French (colonists) soldiers under the leadership of Captain Montcalm,
are manning the hills above old Quebec City watching for the British (colonists), soldiers led by General
James Wolfe. The British are trying to capture the city. Astrix and Oblix tumble into Captain
Montcalm and his soldiers who are stationed on the cliffs above Quebec City, taking them by surprise.
They figure out later that it was the work of Panoramix.
French colonists: The captain (Montcalm), of the French colonists is standing at the top of the hill at
the edge of Quebec City with three other soldiers. He looks over the St. Lawrence and can see the
British colonists advancing towards Quebec City.
Captain Montcalm: The British are advancing send for more re-enforcements!
Soldier #1: I will go! He leaves (through classroom door).
Astrix and Oblix tumble in through the door. They look around wondering where they are. The
French colonists turn around and with surprised looks on their faces as they see Astrix and Ob
lix.
Captain Montcalm to Astrix: Comment vous appelez vous? Du tes-vous?
Astrix: Je mappelle Astrix du Gaul!
Captain Montcalm: Qui?!!! Ou?
Astrix: loudly repeats himself: ASTERIX DU GAUL!!!
Oblix: looks at Astrix: Jai faim! Je voudrais un sandwhich!
Captain Montcalm: State your intentions. Are you with the British?
Astrix: I am with the Gaulois!!!
Captain Montcalm: The who?
Oblix to Astrix: This must be the work of Panoramix! We have time traveled into the future!

Astrix to the Captain: The Gaulois!!!
Captain to Astrix : You will help us fight against the British!
Astrix: You mean the Romans? Yes, we will help you!

Oblix: But I havent had my lunch!
Captain Montcalm: Here are some swords! The British are advancing! The classroom lights are
dimmed.
All of a sudden Astrix and Oblix are transported back in time. They are sucked out through the
classroom door.

Lesson on Verbs
ER Verbs Present Tense
A word that displays action or a state is a verb. Aimer (to like), parler (to speak), and couter (to
listen to), are verbs in the infinitive form. They follow the same regular pattern so they are called
regular verbs.
The French verbs change endings with each subject pronoun. The stem of the verb is formed by
dropping the er from the infinitive.

The ending for each subject is then added to the stem. Even though the endings for the
pronouns je, tu, il/elle, forms are spelled differently, they are pronounced the same.
