Bronwyn Bancroft
Bronwyn Bancroft is an
Australian Aboriginal
artist.
She has provided art
work for more than
20 children's books. Her
paintings are recognised
and celebrated in
galleries in Australia and
around the world.

Australian Indigenous art is


the oldest and ongoing form
of art in the world.
The first forms of Aboriginal
art date back to more than
30,000 years ago. These
were rock carvings, ground
designs and body painting.
These days Indigenous art
takes place in many forms
including works on canvas,
paper, glass, ceramics, print
making and other arts and
crafts.

Malu Kangaroo
Respond: Look at patterns, lines and shapes used
in the Aboriginal paintings. Have a go at creating
your own using chalk, paint, or marker pens.
Materials will be supplied by your teacher.

Aboriginal Inspired Painting


Make: Create your own version of your
favourite painting of the character Malu
from the book Malu Kangaroo. Use
features of Aboriginal inspired paintings
including lines, patterns, symbols and dots.

You might like to even use your own


pattern that you have created.

You will need:

Acrylic paints

Paper

Paint brushed of various sizes


(small, medium, large)

Cotton buds for dotting

Step 1: Choose your favourite painting.

Step 2: Draw the outlines of the larger shapes for


your painting.
Step 3: Get started on your painting using the
features of Aboriginal art including lines, patterns,
symbols and dots.

Meet the Artist
Eric Carle is an American artist.
He is most famous for his book
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
which has sold more than 52
million copies around the world.
He has illustrated more than 70
books. Eric Carle's art is very
unique. His art work is created
by using a collage technique. He
uses hand-painted papers,
which are cut out and layered
to form bright and colourful
artwork.

Did you know ?


The word collage comes from the
French word coller, which means to
glue. Collage became and art form in
the early 1900s by the artist Pablo
Picasso he glued oil cloth to one of his
still life paintings.
Paper banking is the art form that Eric
Carle used for his collage. It involves
hand-painted papers, which are cut out
and layered to form bright and
colourful artwork.

Collage
Make: After reading and exploring the pages of
the books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The
Very Clever Chameleon and Brown Bear, Brown
Bear What Do You See? Use the art form of
paper banking and collage to represent one
character of your choice.
Step 1: You will need to choose a character.
Step 2: Draw an outline of your character on
white A4 paper, using large shapes just like Eric
Carle.
Step 3: Decide on what colours you will need for
your collage . You will then need to paint each
colour all over an A4 piece of paper using big
paint brushes, while the paint is still wet
scratch textures using the plastic knifes and
forks. You might also like to add other colours
on top of your paint using patterns, dots or
lines.

Step 4: It is now time to create your
collage. You will need to draw your
outline of your character (shapes) on
the back of the coloured sheets so you
will need to plan what shape is going
where before you start cutting and
gluing.
Step 5: Cut and glue your paper bank
onto the outline of your character.
You will need:

Different sized paint brushes.


4 or 5 pieces A4 paper
Scissors
Glue
Pencil
Plastic knifes and forks

Jeff Koons is an American


artist who is well known for
his sculpture and paintings
that are based on popular
culture subjects.
His works have been widely
exhibited across the world.

Sculpture has its beginnings in the
15th Centaury. Statues were used to
represent gods and kings. Sculpture
operates in 3 dimensions, you might
know this as 3D.
Sculptures can be made out of many
materials including, clay, wood, metal,
plasticine, glass or sand .

Respond: Observe the shapes the artists has


used to create a 3D sculpture of the character
Popeye. Have a go at experimenting hand
modelling with plasticine . Change the shape of
your plasticine by rolling it into a ball, pull shapes
out of it and twisting pieces around. With spare
pieces that have been broken off make shapes
and reattach.

Tip: You might need to score each side of the


plasticine before attaching. Use a tool or a
plastic knife.

Sculpture
Make: Choose your favourite character from any
of the picture books you have read this term and
create a sculpture of that character using
plasteicine.
You will need:
Coloured plasticine
A4 paper
Pencil
Step 1: Choose you character.
Step 2: Draw a plan for your sculpture, consider
the shapes you will need to sculpt your character.
Step 3: Choose the plasticine colours you will
need to create your sculpture.

Step 4: Start sculpting.

Meet the Artist

Disney was founded in, 1923, by Walt and Roy


as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. They
became well known in the animation industry
and soon started productions in television,
live action films and theme parks.

In 1937 the Walt Disney studios released its


first animated feature film Snow White and
The Seven Dwarfs. Today Walt Disney
studios continues its heritage by producing
animated films that feature magnificent
artistry, ground breaking technologies and
powerful storytelling.

Make - Using the artwork you have created for
Malu Kangaroo, Eric Carle inspired collage, and
the sculpture you created of a character, choose
one artwork to use to retell the story. You will
be using the IPad app My Story and your story
only needs to be one page. You will take a photo
of your artwork and this will be the image for
your story. You will then add technical
conventions for example narration and sound
effects to tell your story.
Step 1: Choose your style of artwork or
favourite character that you will use.
Step 2: Write a script for the story that
corresponds to your artwork.
Step 3: Take a photo of your artwork using the
IPad. You might need to Crop your image. This
means removing unnecessary detail in images.
Step 4: Open the app My Story and follow the
instructions provided by your teacher how to
make your story.
Step 5: Present your artwork to your peers.
