Bronwyn Bancroft
Bronwyn Bancroft is an
Australian Aboriginal
artist.
She has provided art
work for more than
20 children's books. Her
paintings are recognised
and celebrated in
galleries in Australia and
around the world.

Eric Carle is an American artist.
He is most famous for his book
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
which has sold more than 52
million copies around the world.
He has illustrated more than 70
books. Eric Carle's art is very
unique. His art work is created
by using a collage technique. He
uses hand-painted papers,
which are cut out and layered
to form bright and colourful
artwork.

2. Why do you think Eric Carle uses the technique of paper banking?

Make: After reading and exploring the pages of
the books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The
Very Clever Chameleon and Brown Bear, Brown
Bear What Do You See? Use the art form of
paper banking and collage to represent one
character of your choice.
Step 1: You will need to choose a character.
Step 2: Draw an outline of your character on
white A4 paper, using large shapes just like Eric
Carle.
Step 3: Decide on what colours you will need for
your collage . You will then need to paint each
colour all over an A4 piece of paper using big
paint brushes, while the paint is still wet
scratch textures using the plastic knifes and
forks. You might also like to add other colours
on top of your paint using patterns, dots or
lines.

Step 4: It is now time to create your
collage. You will need to draw your
outline of your character (shapes) on
the back of the coloured sheets so you
will need to plan what shape is going
where before you start cutting and
gluing.
Step 5: Cut and glue your paper bank
onto the outline of your character.

Make: Choose your favourite character from any
of the picture books you have read this term and
create a sculpture of that character using
plasteicine.
You will need:
Coloured plasticine
A4 paper

Step 1: Choose you character.
Step 2: Draw a plan for your sculpture, consider
the shapes you will need to sculpt your character.
Step 3: Choose the plasticine colours you will
need to create your sculpture.

Make - Using the artwork you have created for
Malu Kangaroo, Eric Carle inspired collage, and
the sculpture you created of a character, choose
one artwork to use to retell the story. You will
be using the IPad app My Story and your story
only needs to be one page. You will take a photo
of your artwork and this will be the image for
your story. You will then add technical
conventions for example narration and sound
effects to tell your story.
Step 1: Choose your style of artwork or
favourite character that you will use.
Step 2: Write a script for the story that
corresponds to your artwork.
Step 3: Take a photo of your artwork using the
IPad. You might need to Crop your image. This
means removing unnecessary detail in images.
Step 4: Open the app My Story and follow the
instructions provided by your teacher how to
make your story.
Step 5: Present your artwork to your peers.
