Judges Instructions
The playing/singing audition should take approximately 7-8 minutes
and will consist of the following:
PREPARED SELECTION (50 points maximum)
The student will perform the selection he or she plans to do for the
final audition. Please listen to no more than two minutes of the piece
and grade only on what you actually hear. Suggested guidelines for
grading include tone quality, technical skill, rhythmic accuracy, and
interpretation. Please consider the difficulty and appropriateness of the
selection, as well as the overall musicianship that is demonstrated by
the student.
SIGHT READING (20 points maximum)
The student will sight-read one short passage. For the selection, you
should give the student 30 seconds to study the music before judging
begins. For voice, give the starting pitch and arpeggio prior to the
study period. Give the pitch and arpeggio again when 30 seconds have
passed and ask the student to begin. For instrumental sight-reading,
count off the indicated tempo for the student to begin.
INTERVIEW (15 points maximum)
For the screening auditions, students will answer only three questions,
the last of which should be, if selected, will you attend GHP? If the
answer to this question is no or maybe, thank the student for
auditioning and dismiss them. Indicate the students response on the
form and mark it on the ranking sheet.
SUPPORTING INFORMATION (15 points maximum)
Carefully evaluate the supporting information for each student. Please
take into account such particulars as grades, school involvement
musically and otherwise, participation in outside music activities
(GMEA, etc.), and community service.
Once the student has completed the audition, thank him or her for
their time and excuse them. Do not return the audition form to the
student. Once you have completed the scoring on the audition forms
for your panel, compile them and list the students in order (highest to
lowest score) on the ranking sheet and provide comments as
necessary.
In addition to the overall score, please rate the student 1-5 as to their
overall ability using the following criteria:
5 ~ Definitely should be recommended for the final audition
4 ~ An excellent choice and probably should be recommended
