What are your surroundings in the classroom?
What is a map?
7.1.K.B Describe the locations of places in the home,
school, and community to gain an understanding of
relative location.
Students will be able to identify their surroundings and
create a school map with 80% accuracy.

Before- observe how each student is answering the


essential questions prior to the activity
During- observe to see if the student is actually
absorbing the information or just following along.
After- have the student explain their map to the teacher
with 80% accuracy.

Activating Prior Knowledge


Have the students watch My Map Movie on Youtube.
Teacher will ask the students: Do you know what a map
is? What are your surroundings? Can you follow a map?
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Teacher will discuss maps can take you anywhere far or
close.
Teacher will map a classroom map then students will
make a school map alone.
Big Idea Statement
The teacher will say that the students will be making a
map of the whole school.
Essential Questions Statement
What does surroundings mean to you?
What are your surroundings in the classroom?
What is a map?
Can you follow a map?
Objective Statement
Students will be able to identify their surroundings and
create a school map with 80% accuracy.
Transition
The students will start out on the floor infront of the
projector to view the Youtube video.
The students will remain on the floor to discuss and
create our classroom map.
The students will then take a quick field trip of the
school to get a feel for their surroundings and what they
are.
The students then come immediately back to their seats
and create their own map to get around the school.
