Students will understand the reasons behind the reformation
Students will identify the religious reformations effects on Europes political structure and
society

15 minutes: Video from YouTube Crash Course History: Martin Luther and Pope Leo X
Excerpts

15-20 minutes: Teacher passes out Handout 3.1 SOAPS For Primary Source Documents and
Martin Luthers Ninety-five Theses and Pope Leo Xs Students are to begin working on
Handout 3.1 and if not finish the worksheet for homework. Students may use their handwritten
Cornell Notes if needed.

Procedures:
Introduction:
I introduce the lesson by asking students to get out their homework, Venn Diagrams, and ask
students questions about the two religious denominations from the Venn Diagram
Body and Transition:
Students watch a fifteen minute video from Crash Course World History: Martin Luther and the
Reformation
Teacher hands out Handout 3.1 SOAPS along with Martin Luthers excerpts and Pope Leo Xs
excerpts
Closure:
Students are to begin working on their SOAPS handout along with their handwritten Cornell
Notes if needed

Last fifteen minutes of class, they can find a partner to share information with
Assessment:
Diagnostic / Informal: Asking students to get out their Vinn Diagrams to see who has completed
them and who hasnt
Formative / Informal: Observing students watching video and completing handout 3.1
Summative: Students working on Handout 3.1
