Proposal 2016

Mission Statement
Under the direction of musical direction of Berklee students Richard
Dye and Alexander Anderson, we, the Afro-Exchange Program, plan to
travel from the United States to Kenya on a cultural outreach program. This
trip will take place from 7/1/2016-8/1/2016. The Afro-Exchange is
comprised of musicians from the United States, the Puerto Rico, and
Nigeria. These musicians are Dokun Oke, Alex Gasser, Richard Dye,
Alexander Anderson, VanDarrel Woods, and Ayinde Webb. All of the
members have studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
These are the objectives of this cultural outreach program:
Share our music in the tradition of jazz ambassadors (i.e. Dizzy
Gillespie, Duke Ellington) by performing concerts for the community
of Kenya.
Study and document the musical traditions and lineage in the Kenyan
vernacular.
Provide clinics and workshops to the youth of Kenya on the jazz
tradition, and the power of music to lead social change.
Learn from the culture. people, and historical sites in Kenya.
We hope to work in collaboration with the Global Youth Groove
organization, which is directed by Sammy Lutomia, and provides musical
opportunities to the youth in Kenya. We also hope to work with the US
Embassy in Kenya, and possibly other African nations, the Kenyan Embassy
in the Unites States, and the local music communities in Kenya during our
stay. We hope to expose and be exposed to different. We will be making our
services of music and education available to the community for four weeks
of intensive performances, clinics, workshops, and research programs.
