This applies, for example, to measuring tools like gauges and ceriain structural components, Sub-zero treatment Immediately after quenching the piece should bbe sub-zero treated to between ~70 and -80°C (95 to -L10"F) ~ soaking time 3-4 hours — followed by tempering or aging. Sub-zero treatment will give a hardness increase of 1-3 HIRC. Avoid intricate shapes as there will be risk of cracking. Aging Tempering after quenching is replaced by aging at 110-140°C 230-285°R), Holding time 25-100 hours. 6 ASSAB DF-3 = Welding Welding of ol steel should generally be | avoided, due to the risk of cracking. Where | repair welding is necessary, however, it is essential to pre-heat the part concerned prior to welding. Immediately after the welding ‘operation: 1, Stress-relieve material that has been weld- ed in the soft annealed state. 2, Temper material qwice that has been welded in the hardened and tempered condition, More cetailed recommendations canbe ‘obieined from the suppliers of welding elec- odes, or from our brochure “Welding of ‘Tool Steels” Grinding Correct grinding technique will avoid grind- cracks and improve tool life. Tools that have been tempered al low temperatures are especially sensitive during grinding, Only properly dressed, soft, open-grained grinding wheels should be used. Restrict the peripheral speed and use plenty of coolant. Basic in- | formation on recommended wheels is to be found in our publication “Grinding of Tool Steel” More detailed instructions can be obtained from the grinding wheel manufacturer. Electrical-discharge machining :DM, “spark erosion”) If spark-erosion is performed in the hardened and tempered condition, the tool should then be given an additional wemper at abt, 25°C (50°F) below the previous tempering tempe~ rature, 9 Property comparison chart for ASSAB / Cold Work Steels Th jas (Mme) nie Tar) Goce | =< (= |< oo —— eo ol = 7 1 Further information | Please contact your local ASSAB representa | tive for forthur information on the selection, heat treatment, application and availability of tool stocks - : a) For general purpose, blarking and forming tools ASSAB DIS i recommended 9 a
