Prior to lesson
Have students complete calendar activities then meet at the carpet

Read Monster Musical Chairs
Discuss with students what is happening in each photo (we are
taking away)
Have students return to their seats and bring up 10 frame on
math notebook file
Ask students who here likes cheese raise your hand, and then
ask students what animal do they know that also likes cheese?
Read the short rhyme bout the little mouse
Ask students what the mouse did (he ate one)
Ask how many are left, and how we can figure this out without
counting all the pieces (count back)
Go through several examples taking away varying amounts, and
have students count back to get the answer

Learning Activity #2
Discuss with students what we used to help us count on for
addition (number line)
Explain to students that we can use a number line to help us
count back for subtraction
Go through several example with students using number line on
their name tag
Handout number line subtraction sheet, and do two examples
with students before having them complete worksheet

Have students return to carpet and introduce Snowman Slide
game
Explain to students that they will play against a partner, starting
at 20 and roll a die.
