NURS 401- Career Assessment

Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is for the student to assemble a Power Point
presentation. In addition the student will organize content about their value/viewpoint of
the professional image of a nurse. There is no right or wrong to the content.
Approach to Assignment
I wanted to portray my image of a professional nurse in todays health care system
versus how the publics image of what a nurse is. Nursing is a profession I value and
respect, and I wanted that impression to be understood by the viewer of the power point
presentation. Despite negative stereotypical images that continue to be associated with
the nursing profession, my goal was to show in this power point presentation what a
significant role nurses continue to contribute to the success of providing health care.
Reason for Inclusion
This assignment was included in my portfolio, because of my strong belief in the
important role nurses play in the outcomes of patients. Our health care system would not
function if it was not for the efficiency and knowledge of the nursing profession. I am
proud to have nursing as my chosen profession and wish to impart that pride in this
presentation. I also wanted to acknowledge that there is still work to be done on
educating the public on what a nurse is and is not.
Professionalism

Demonstrates accountability for ones own professional practice

In this power point presentation I presented the options of how nurses can
influence the public on the role they play in the health care system. Emphasis was
placed on nurses educating the public about the roles of the nursing profession. The
value of nursing knowledge should be highlighted instead of nursing virtues. Despite
the many images the public has of the nursing profession, nurses have the ability to
inform and dispel the myths that continue to surround the profession.
Communication

Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups and

disciplines using a variety of media in a variety of contexts
I was asked by my daughters kindergarten teacher to give a short presentation

about being a nurse. I know that 5 and 6 year olds have short attention spans so I
decided to include this power point as part of the presentation to keep their interest.
Because of the age group I slightly altered the actual presentation, but they enjoyed
the visual images.
