ECNG2000 - Electromechanical Energy Conversion
TUTORIAL SHEET 2 - D.C. MACHINES
1. A four-pole, DC shunt generator has a lap-connected winding with a total resistance of 0.1 W. The field
winding is 50 W. It supplies a total load of 3000W at 100V. Calculate the current per armature path and
the generated EMF assuming 0.8V contact voltage drop per bush.
[8 A; 104.6V]
2. An eight-pole, lap-connected armature has 1000 conductors and runs at 750 rpm. If the flux per pole is
3x10-2Wb, calculate the open-circuit EMF. If the machine has been wave wound what would be the
required speed to generate 600V?
[375 V; 300 rpm]
3. A two-pole, separately excited, DC generator has full-load conditions of 200V, 15kW and 1000 rpm.
Find the generated EMF when conditions are altered such that the flux is reduced by 20 percent and the
speed is double. Find also the power output for a current of 50 A at these new conditions. Ra = 0. 1W.
[332 V; 16.35 kW]

4. Calculate the gross torque generated by a two-pole, DC shunt motor having 480 armature conductors, a
flux of 8mWb and an armature current of 15A. At what speed will the machine run when connected
across a 100V supply if the flux and current conditions are unchanged?R a = 1.2W
[9.16 Nm; 1280 rpm]
5. A 400 V, DC shunt machine, rated at 10kW, has a normal full-load speed of 1000 rpm, while the
armature is accepting 30A. Determine the approximate speed, useful torque and power output for this
armature current. Assume friction and iron losses are constant and armature reaction is negligible. Ra =
0.7W.
[ 1026 rpm; 45.2 Nm; 4.85 kW]

6. A motor drives a drum on which is wound a woven fabric. A drive is required to maintain a constant
pull of 250 N on the fabric to be wound. The linear fabric speed is to be constant at 3 m/s while the
diameter varies from 0.75 to 2m. What motor ratings is required and over what speed range must it be
controlled?
Neglect losses.
[750 W; 180/1.5p; 180/4p]
7. A two-pole, 250 V, DC series motor runs at 1000 rpm. It delivers a gross power of 3.73 kW when taking
20A with both field coils in series. What current will the motor take when delivering the same gross
power but with the field coils in parallel? Find the corresponding torque and speed.Ra = 1.1W; Rf =
0.4W per field coil; flux is assumed proportional to current; iron and friction losses constant.
[16.3A;1079rpm;33Nm]
