NEXT MEETING: Tues., April 19, 2016
Noon, Soda Center, SMC

Shalom can Change the World

John Erickson, winner of the lowball Fine

Free Hat, extolled the merits of a certain
hardware store and even gave up some
sample merchandise, a high tech
flashlight
made in China.
He also
presented to our commanding officer a
Navy captains hat which was smaller and
probably more comfortable than the Rajah
turban.

Greeter and Invocator Ron Mucovich

~BUSINESS MEETING~
President Roger, perhaps a bit weary
from the meeting setup, opened the
meeting with a wimpy ring of the bell; his
mulligan ring was adequate by club
standards.
Jim Campbell
offered
thoughtful Thought for the Day, and led the
Pledge of Allegiance.
The many guests in attendance were:
Friends of Rotary Larry & Carol Tessler,
Diego Rios, and Mary Caburi; Rotary
spouses Linda Campbell, Joyce
Ellenberg, Mary Sue Erickson, Ann
Damaschino, Leslie Lynch, and Pam
Reneau.

I wouldnt look either, Roger

Ron Mucovich gave a HB because of all

the spouses in attendance . . . Kevin
Reneau gave a HB because he and Pam
had recently vacationed in Palm Springs
and he was able to sweet-talk his way out
of a fine. . . . Ann Damaschino gave a HB
because she had finished their tax forms
and had just four quarters left (or
something like that) . . . John Erickson
gave eight HBs because a busload of Ace
judges rated his store a winner in a
business contest (if they had tried to park
the bus, John may not have won) . . . Mary
Sue Erickson gave a HB to get John to
shut up and sit down. . . . Linda May gave
a HB because she completed eight tax

returns of family members . . .

Lad Lynch gave a HB for Leslies two
cataract-free eyes. . . . Jim Campbell
gave a HB for the Warriors great season
(even though they had only won 72 games
then), then many others jumped (slowly)
on the Dubs bandwagon with a buck
each.
President Roger presented Tony
Schoemehl with a pound of the worlds
strongest coffee, Death Wish, for him to
used in the USS Hornets Navy coffee
pots. Is that the kind where the spoon
stands up straight in the cup?
~CLUB SERVICE KUDOS~
We owe a debt of gratitude to the Club
members that set up the infrastructure for
each meeting. While the Rajah sets up
the sound system every week for our SMC
meetings, it isnt with just a snap of his
fingers. We always count on our tech,
Frank May, to rig the proper electronics to
be able to show the speakers videos.
Dick Vance, Tony Schoemehl, Al
Simonsen, John Erickson, and Kevin
Reneau all help when able. This week
away from SMC, Tony arranged the
catering and bar, and Gary Irwin and
Roger Gregory schlepped some Rotary
gear from the locker to make us feel at
home.
And, of course, we really
appreciate that Ron Mucovich and the
Serbian Church allow us to use the hall
on these occasions. Sorry if I missed
anybody.
Cliff Dochterman was at the Evanston
IL headquarters of Rotary International
this week, and we are sure the
organization is now even better
because
of
his
wisdom
and

contributions.
~ANNOUNCEMENTS~
The next E-Waste collection day will be April
30. Rich Render circulated the signup list
and got a lot of volunteers, especially
because of the food and beverages he
promised. Room for just a few more lucky
workers.

on Saturday, June 18 at the Martinez Bocce
courts; signups are being taken by Captain
Angelo.
He will conduct a coffee &
doughnut-fueled practice session a few
weeks before the tournament.

held at Blackhawk Country Club on
Tuesday May 3, and will feature PRIPs
Rick King, Gary Huang (from Taiwan),

Debbie Roessler announced that the
Chamber of Commerce mixer which Rotary
will host will be on Wednesday, Sept 21. We
should use this event to raise money for the
playground project.
Evie Michon reported that 61 books have
been delivered to Juvenile Hall library by
Debbie Roessler. Many of these books
have been donated by local bookstores
along with the donations from the Club.
Barbara Bruner won the raffle and the $10,
but couldnt find the lucky marble.

~CAMPO INTERACT PROJECT~

The Campolindo Interact Club is
having a used clothing drive the week of
Monday, April 18th. The clothing will be
sent to the White Pony Express, Free
General Store for distribution to
homeless and destitute people in Contra
Costa. The clothing drive will run for two
weeks so bring your clean, used clothing
donations to our regular meetings on
April 19th and we will make sure they get
to the Interact Club.
~SPEAKER OF THE DAY~
Our speaker today was Cameron Deal,
the Senior Field Representative in
Lamorinda for Assemblywoman Catherine
Baker who was delayed by proceedings in
her legislative committees and could not
present the program. Cameron is a UC
Davis graduate who grew up in and still
lives Lafayette. She has worked in politics
about eight years.

Cameron said the Assemblywomans

program concentrates on four areas:
Education, Infrastructure, encouragement
of business and job growth, and Financial
Discipline. The latter means saying No a
lot as legislators always have constituents
who want to direct government spending
toward their favorite topics.
She has gotten four of her bills to pass,
dwelling on Child Abuse Prevention,
easing the transfer of Veterans to civilian
life, easing regulations for vocational
licensing, and promoting transparency and
accountability for the new Bay Bridge
project.
Assemblywoman
Baker
and
Assemblyman Glazer from Orinda are
working together to obtain emergency
funds to fix the new sinkhole on Rheem
Blvd. She opposes the twin-tunnel delta
water project and the high-speed train
favored by Gov. Brown. She receives
many good legislative ideas from
constituents, and her goal is to be
responsive to the people she represents.
