i thank you God for most this amazing day
For me, this poem completely filled my soul, expressing everything beautiful and good in
such a brilliant way. One of the first things I noticed about this poem was its general lack of
capitalization. In reserving his capital letters for the mention of God, E.E. Cummings creates a
deep respect for the supreme Creator and conveys the speakers feelings of inadequacy to be part
of such an amazing day. The poem seems to be written in a way that conveys the thought process
of the speaker as he becomes aware of the true beauty of the earth and all of Gods creations
creating almost a stream of conscience which forms a personalized effect of the sacred and
overwhelming power the speaker of the poem is experiencing. The entire second stanza of the
poem is a parenthetical statement, perhaps to convey a quick side thought as the speakers mind
attempts to grasp the full glory of God, revealed through the beauty of the day. In the second
stanza, he notes, this is the suns birthday;this is the birth day of life and of love and wings.
With the birth of a new heart metaphorically comes the birth of the sun, representing the birth of
hope and meaning for the speaker. The third stanza connects back to the first, continuing its
interrupted sentence by asking how any person can sense all the creations of God and doubt
unimaginable You? The first three stanzas create one sentence, ending with a direct address to
God. It is as if his long train of thought and reasoning led him to the understanding of the
greatness of God, and that conclusion left even his mind with a loss for words.
