Overview
This lesson concentrates on internet safety. Students will learn what information is safe to put on the internet and
what is too personal. The students will learn safe online conversation skills. Students will be split into groups and
given cards with information on the internet. They will be asked to sort the cards into piles of safe and unsafe
information to share. After the activity, the student will reconvene in a large group to discuss their findings.
Students will be given time to fill out a worksheet relaying what information is safe/unsafe to share on the internet
found in the small group activity.
Essential Questions
What is safe information to share? What is appropriate information to share in a chat conversation? What are
unsafe pieces of information? Why is some information okay to share and other information not? What are some
good ways to protect yourself from internet criminals?

Assessment
Students will be divided into groups. They will be given cards with different information someone might share on
the internet. They will be asked to sort the cards into piles of safe and unsafe information to share. After the
activity, the student will participate in a large group discussion guided by the teacher. Students will be given time
to fill out a worksheet relaying what information is safe/unsafe to share on the internet. The teacher will monitor
progress during small group activities and individual work.
Resources
There will be a teacher-created worksheet for students to complete. The information on the flash cards will be
gathered from actual social networking sites. The students will not need any previous technology skills to
complete the activities.
Management
Students will work in the classroom in small group, large group, and individual activities.

Differentiation
The students will be given an opportunity to see, write, listen to, discuss, and practice the skills in this lesson. The
students will help each other in small groups while being monitored by the teacher. Student that need help with
the work sheet will come ask for help or go to services provided by the school.
