Description of Activities and Setting

Gather students on the carpet around you with their
whiteboards and markers. They need to know what our lesson
will be today.
Ask: ok boys and girls last week we learned how to look up
words in the dictionary. We also learned what different words
mean. Can someone give me the definition of the word
excited? How about Furious? how might you use those words
in a sentence?
Say: Today we will be learning what synonym and antonyms
are. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to read and
recognize the differences between the two by drawing an X
and coloring the correct word.
There will be an anchor chart with one side, labeled synonym
and the other antonym in front of the students. Lets look at
the word synonym, synonyms is a word that means exactly
the same or very nearly the same as another word.
I want you to turn to your partner and in your own
words tell me what you think that means. The kids will
turn to their partner
Ok so can someone share with the class what they
think it means.
the SAME another good word to remember is that
two words are SIMILAR synonym, similar
Lets look over the other words.

4. Guided Practice

The word is cheerful, a word that is similar is delighted,

and can anyone tell me a similar word to cheerful and
delighted? There can be more than one or two
synonyms for a word. Overjoyed is a great word!
The next word is Wealthy a synonym for wealthy is rich.
Now lets look at the last word. Boys and girls I am
going to cover the synonym to cold. I want you to turn
to your partner and come up with a synonym that
would be a great match for cold
Chilly is a great synonym for cold, what is another
synonym? Freezing? Good job!
Remember if were to replace the word with their
synonym, the sentence should still flow the same. It
was chilly outside today I am glad I brought my sweater
to school, now lets change chilly with cold. It was cold
outside today, I am glad I brought my sweater to
school.
Now lets look at the word antonym. If synonym means
two words that are similar or the same what do you
think antonyms mean?
Exactly! Antonyms means two words that have the
opposite meaning.
Examples would be big and small, happy and sad
But lets look at some different examples. The antonym
of cheerful is miserable.
Show me your cheerful face, now show me a miserable
face. Were they the same? Nooo
wealthy is the antonym of poor
cold is the antonym of hot
Say: now that we know that synonym means the same or
similar, and antonym means opposite lets try a few words.
On your whiteboard I will be telling you certain words and I
want you to write their antonym or synonym. I will leave the
anchor chart so you can look at it if you need a refresher.
Little-tiny earth world
good- terrific noise- ruckus
bother- annoy
Yell shout nasty- horrible delicious- scrumptious prettylovely quick-fast
big- huge large enormous scared- frightened tired- sleepy
Antonyms

If a child uses the incorrect use of a word remind the

class to substitute the word in a sentence and see if
they sound the same. Also remind them to not look at
their neighbor. It is ok to have different answers.
Also refer back to the anchor charts
They will have 20 seconds to come up with an answer
so they do not feel rushed.
Have students return to their seats by calling them by groups.
In the middle, there should be a stack of papers. Each
student should have one. The worksheet will show 20 bubbles
with two words. Students should color in the synonyms and
out an X if they are antonyms.

the following criteria: at least 17 bubbles filled in correctly.

need help filling out the bubbles.
