COMPETENCY 1
Natural M. Breeden
SWK 4910 001: Integrative Field Seminar

CORE COMPETENCY: 1
Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior

Practice Behavior: 1
Make ethical decisions by applying the
standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant
laws and regulations, models for ethical
decision-making, ethical conduct of research,
and additional codes of ethics as appropriate to
context.
Abide by the NASW Code of Ethics as well as any laws
or regulations established by the school system.

Practice Behavior: 2
Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and
maintain professionalism in practice situations.
Working not only with students but, with the student's parents or guardians,
my personal views and values based on how I was raised differ from the
parenting views and values of many of the student's parents. I have to
manage my personal views and values to try and understand their reasoning
behind trying to teach their child a valuable lesson.
Example: A child may have many unexcused absences because they chose not to
get ready for school on time. The parent refuses to take them because they are
trying to teach them a valuable lesson. Maintaining professionalism, the next step
would be making the parent aware of the Compulsory Attendance Law, stating
that a parent/guardian is in violation once ten or more unexcused absences have
been accumulated.

Practice Behavior: 3
Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior;
appearance; and oral, written, and electronic
communication.
While at my internship, I adhere to the business casual dress
code, as well as not using any inappropriate language (e.g.
profanity) when speaking with my supervisor, staff, students,
and parents or guardians.

Practice Behavior: 4
Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate
practice outcomes.
When my supervisor may step out of her office, I answer her
office phone in a polite manner saying, "Mrs. Brown's office..."
Also, when my supervisor may allow me to use her computer
for researching material, I do just that rather than browsing
around on social media or shopping websites.

Practice Behavior: 5
Use supervision and consultation to guide professional
judgment and behavior.
After assisting my supervisor at our first meeting with a
student about an excessive amount of unexcused absences
and their academic performance, I asked my supervisor a vital
question, "How do you get the students to open up to you
about the reason they may be absent or tardy?" To add,
anytime when I am puzzled about what to do in a situation
that may arise through my social work profession, my
supervisor offers me a solution.
