The materials, paper and fabric, work well with the umbrella concept because of the
interactions of the components of existing umbrellas. The shaft of an umbrella typically
does not move or bend in any direction, which creates a sturdy foundation for umbrellas. This fits the characteristics of paper very well. This is because paper can be very
sturdy, but once it is bent in a certain way it will lose its structure. So replacing the
shaft material with paper suits our design well, as we can crease the edges of the
shaft to create the bends, as well as add some grip for the user. The canopies of umbrellas tend to be a soft, flexible material, that can stretch out if need be. Most umbrellas use a type of flexible fabric or plastic for their canopy, which is exactly what our
fabric is used for.

Interaction and Human Factors

To turn on the UmBrilla, the user plugs in the USB cord into a computer. In order to
illuminate the area, the user moves the Runner up along the Shaft of the UmBrilla just
like an ordinary umbrella. The user can then tilt the UmBrilla on its side and rest it on
the Ribs and the bottom of the Shaft.

Product Summary
A portable, umbrella shaped desk lamp. The inspiration came from the SFU Surrey
campus ceiling framework. While we were brainstorming of an idea, we looked up at
the ceiling and thought about building a framework like the ceiling of SFU. Our color
theme is based upon our personas interest in fashion design, and men suits. This
lamp uses a bright white LED light connected to USB cord that can be plugged into a
power source to light up. The user can slide the runner upwards to open up the
canopy which determines the cone of light.

Forms and Process

Our primary direction was to find a form that best fits our chosen materials, paper and fabric. To increase the portability of the lamp, we were initially thinking of making a lamp that
can be folded and carried inside a bag. In our first prototype, folded body, basic framework of umbrella were tested and we developed the first prototype into secondary iteration
which successfully implemented the workable runner and shaft. Also, we applied the color scheme, testing with different finish of the material. For example, matt finish for the body
and reflective finish for the inner fabric. In the final stage, we chose a stretchy fabric, built metal frames, and implemented lighting with the USB powered cable.

Context
The UmBrilla can be used on any computer with a USB port to power the lamp. It is
also very portable in which the user can easily move around the product in a confined
space.

Aiden Lee is a 23 year old art-oriented SIAT student who spends most of his time
working on projects, sketching, and building models. Aiden is into current fashion
trends and is a follower of Tom Ford, an American fashion designer and creative
director at Gucci.

The colour scheme we chose is based off one of Tom Fords suit designs, with
turquoise, black, and white/beige as the colour scheme. Since our persona is a highly
fashion-oriented person, we wanted to apply the aesthics of fashion over our design
so that he can feel more emotionally attached to the prodcut. Not only is the physical
interactions of the product important, but it is also a crucial part of interation to establish the emotional connection between the user and product.

- light setting is usually poor

- difficult to find space in studios

- visually attractive

- difficult to locate plugs around

- prefers to work alone in a

- cordless and compact

- many things on the desk

- light-weight

- messy environment

- durable

secluded space
- have a lot of things to carry
