DNHY 490S Dental Hygiene Capstone Service Learning Project

Project Description
The goal of this project is to provide students with an online or face-to face opportunity to
demonstrate a culmination of learning experiences through completion of a community-based
service-learning project. The service-learning project also affords an opportunity to
demonstrate competency in Education, Leadership, Humanities, Liberal Arts, Business, and
Community Health that may not be well documented through other academic coursework. This
type of civic engagement affords the opportunity for a first-hand experience in a field setting.
With mentorship, students work alongside other community minded professionals who face and
solve real world problems every day. Weekly blogs with guided questions offers potential for critical
thinking and reflective thought. Each student must complete a satisfactory service learning
experience in order to fulfill the Online BSDH Degree Completion program requirements .
The faculty, Program Director, and EWU will assist you, but the student retains the final
responsibility.

Weekly Blogs
A blog is a web based log or journal. In the Online BSDH curriculum students will create a blog
using a WORD document instead of a personal website. Students can use the following page to
develop their personal blog page. Weekly guided questions are posted. Students can use the Insert
Tab in WORD to add pictures, clipart, WordArt and other artifacts to personalize their blog
document. The Page Layout Tab provides access to borders and colors. Students can use fonts and
color as well as Table Layout and Design. Creativity is encouraged and demonstrates knowledge of
MS Word as well as critical thinking and individuality. Have fun!

This Capstone course was designed to mirror more of a bachelor level thesis.
Meaning, the student's role was to take what they have learned in the entire
curriculum and create their own project to show they have earned the right to
receive the BSDH degree. The professor's role is to guide, encourage, and
provide resources, etc. through the journey, not to tell the student what or
how to create their project. Keeping this in mind, please reflect on what and
how the course has contributed to your personal perception of
professionalism and growth as an independent and/or autonomous person,
and how you will use the knowledge gained in this course in your future
endeavors. Please identify the areas of the course that added the most to your
learning. What areas or parts of the course would you change?

Documenting Capstone Service Learning Project

Besides the weekly reflective blogs, the electronic portfolio is a means by which the
student demonstrates competency in the BSDH Capstone Service Learning Project. Students
should post artifacts, with reflection (they may choose to use one of their blogs) to support their
service learning experience. Students are encouraged to collect all documentation and artifacts
related to this course and save them in an online file. It may be helpful to identify files and
folders concerning BSDH Capstone in organizing documentation.
Artifacts that prove competency include collection of work samples, such as digital
video, digital pictures, PowerPoints, evaluations, self-assessments, reflections, and other
documents that demonstrate competence in each of the required learning experiences. A good
idea is to be well versed in video and photo and use these as well as simple podcasts to
documents their service learning experiences. Artifacts and reflections should demonstrate
growth and understanding in the importance of civic engagement as a professional. Personal and
professional growth should be documented in the portfolio.
