PROGRAM ACTIVITIES//TIME MANAGEMENT


Direct and Indirect students services should account for 80 percent of more of the
Professional School Counselors time spent (ASCA, 2012). Below are a sample of appropriate
direct and indirect student services and inappropriate time usage activities for the Professional
School Counselor from the ASCA National Model:
Appropriate Activities for School Counselors:
- Individual student planning
- Interpreting cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests
- Provide counseling to students for: tardiness/absence/truancy, disciplinary issues, proper
school dress
- Collaborating with teachers to present core curriculum lessons
- Analyzing GPA in relationship to achievement
- Interpreting student records
- Providing classroom management suggestions
- Ensuring student records are maintained as per state and federal regulation
- Help the administration identify and resolve student issues, needs, and problems
- Provide individual small-group counseling services to students
- Advocating for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams, and
school attendance review boards
- Analyzing disaggregated data
Inappropriate Activities for School Counselors:
- Coordinating paperwork and data entry of all new students
- Coordinating testing programs
- Signing excuses for tardy/absent students
- Performing disciplinary actions or assigning disciplinary consequences
- Sending students home for inappropriate dress
- Serving as a substitute teacher
- Computing GPAs
- Maintaining student records
- Supervising classrooms or common areas
- Keeping clerical records
- Assisting with duties in the administration office
- Providing long-term therapy in schools to address psychological disorders
- Coordinating school wide individual education plans, study teams, and school attendance
review boards.
- Serving as a data entry clerk

Foundation Activities
Introduce ourselves to administration and faculty at first meeting.
Create and Administer student assessment survey to all students
Create School Counseling program geared towards needs of student population
Management Activities
Introduce ourselves to students and faculty to explain role of counselor
Send newsletter out to parents introducing the school counseling program and its
purpose (ongoing, monthly)
Delivery Activities
Assist in registering new students (ongoing, as needed)
School counselor introduction classroom guidance in each homeroom
Identify at risk students and meet with each one
Individual counseling sessions with students based on academic, personal/social,
and career issues
Schedule changes (ongoing, as needed)
Provide parents/ guardians with referrals to outside agencies to meet medical/
academic,/ basic needs (ongoing, as needed)
Make contact with community resources such as DHHR, shelters, & local mental
health facilities
