Synopsis of Unit:
This unit will cover the importance of craft and structure of literary pieces. There
will be lessons in discovering authors purpose of form and why certain literary
aspects are placed where they are within a piece of work.
A. Lesson Title: Determining Authors Purpose Through Literary Devices

Tennessee Standards:
1. RLA11.3-Analyze the impact of the authors choices regarding how to develop
and relate elements of a story or drama.
2. RLA11.4-Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the
text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple
meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful.
Teachers Objectives:
Students will be able to
1. Identify the steps of development during a story.
2. Identify the different meanings of words/phrases in a story relating to literary
analysis.
3. Identify the significance of the steps of development during a story and the
different meanings of words/phrases in a story relating to literary analysis.
Assessment:
A. Pre: Students will have reviewed the rubric given in class as they work on their
project regarding his/her visual project.
B. Post: The attached self-reflection guide will allow students to review their own
work. The attached peer-review guide will allow students to reflect on their
classmates work.
Procedures:
A. Set/Motivation: The beginning of class will include instructing students to begin
their Opening Activity, which will be located at the front of the classroom. I will
be collecting their projects as they work on their Opening Activity.
B. Instruction:
1. Teaching Strategies:
I will begin review of the Opening Activity, which should take 5-7
minutes.
Students will place their Opening Activity in their binder with other
supplementary work.
Students will turn in their Visual Project with their rubric.
The class will begin by discussing students favorite part of the project
and what they believed they learned.

Students will present their Visual Project through the use of Prezi or
PowerPoint
The students will be allowed to ask me questions as they finish
presentations.
Todays exit ticket will be turning in his/her thoughts and reflections of
the project as a whole, such as if it were beneficial to his/her learning
experience.
2. Checking for Understanding:
While the students are presenting I will monitor them as I score his/her
project according to the rubric. I will assess their learning by his/her
understanding, which will be presented by the information in their Visual
Presentation.
3. Supervised Practice:
I will supervise student presentation, which will involve small teacher
interaction until it is necessary to move presentations forward.
4. Independent Practice:
Students will be given immediate feedback concerning his/her
presentation and will be required to make corrections for homework.
5. Closure Summary:
Students will present his/her graphic novel, which will show
understanding of the unit.
6. Alternative Activities
a. Enrichment: Students will present his/her ideas in their pairs, so therefore
there will be no need for leaders.
b. Remediation: Students struggling will be allowed to have their partners to
present the information. In the self-reflection and peer-reflection then their
input on participation will be required.
c. Accommodations: Students who are identified to have special needs will
be partnered with a student who has full understanding of the unit to guide
them through the group project. I will also be available before and after
school and planning period
Materials:
Students will be working with the textbook where The Pit and the Pendulum, by
Edgar Allen Poe and required information will be presented in the rubric. The use of
the white board, or SmartBoard, will be used during discussion for important ideas.
Students will show their presentations through the use of Prezi or PowerPoint.
