During the eight-year period from 1965 to 1973, the College operated under the 3-3 Calendar in which students enrolled for three courses during each of three terms. 37 UNITS were required for the degree and each UNIT was equivalent to 3.33 semester hours or to 5 quarter hours. Since September 1973, the College has employed the 4-4-1 Calendar. Under this system. the normal student load consists of four 4-CREDIT courses for each of two I4-week terms and one 4-CREDIT course for the 4-week intensive term each spring. 136 CREDITS are required for the degree (148 for the B.F.A.) and each CREDIT is equiva- lent to 0.9 semester hours or 1.33 quarter hours. GRADES wn Until September 1962, grades were awarded on the 3.0 scale (A = 3.0). During the ten-year period from 1962 until 1972, the College awarded grades on the 4.0 scale (A= 4.0) with grades of A-B-C-D-E-Pass (P) - Unsatisfactory (U), Since September 1972, the College has employed a nine-grade scale with hal-grade intervals (A-AB-B-BC-C-CD-D- DE-E) and with A equal to 4.0, AB equal to 3.5, etc. Pass (S) or Fail (F) grades are not computed in the grade point average. Deferred grades, such as Incomplete (IN) and Work in Progress (IP), indicate the granting of six-week and eight- month extensions respectively for the completion of coursework. The grade N represents Audit and no credit is awarded. The grade is given when a grade is not received from an instructor. SPECIAL COURSES English 099 and Mathematics 099 (formerly numbered 100) are the only remedial courses offered by the College and credit earned in these courses does not count toward the degree. Courses with the department code “MS” or “PTS” are one-week, one-credit, preterm seminars taken for degree credit during orientation by freshman only. Courses bearing the department code “ST” are four-week, four-credit, non-departmental courses offered during the Spring Intensive Term. SPECIAL PROGRAMS : Foreign Study — Alma College sponsors foreign study programs in Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, India, Italy, New Zealand, Peru, Scotland and Spain. Credits and grades earned are reported to the Registrar by the Program Director and entered on the permanent record card. For the sake of convenience, credits for guest students are recorded in semester hours. } 4-4-1 Consortium — Alma College participates in a Consortium of schools using the 4-4-1 calendar. Credit earned by Alma students at consortium schools are recorded to the Alma permanent record, but not all consortium schools maintain a record card for guest students. Bay View Conservatory - Alma College sponsored a summer program at Bay View, Michigan through the summer of 1994 for students of music. Again, credits for guest students were recorded in semester hours.
