Field Experience Lesson Plan 3
Introduction
The presented is a 75-minute ESL lesson plan constructed for a group of 30
Secondary 2 students at the International School of Montreal. This lesson plan takes place
in the fourteenth week of the school year and it is the fourth formative assessment of the
student teacher.
This lesson is designed to help the students in producing written work
(Competency 3).

In a lot of the students written work, they often use general

descriptions, which do not give the readers a clear understanding of what is shown and
this leads to the deduction of points along with the comments show, dont tell. This
lesson is to help the students understand what is asked of them and to introduce them to
descriptive writing. This lesson also informally examines the C1 of the students (Interacts
orally in English) during their group work.
The students are advanced and are mostly fluently bilingual, but the classroom
policy states that the students are only allowed to speak in English and the infraction of
this rule will result in the deduction of points in the final grade.
It is my hopes that this lesson meets the requirements for the professional
competency 3, which consists of developing learning situations that are appropriate to the
students by using the proper attention grabbers to get the students engaged. On a more
logistic level of classroom management, I hope that my classroom management
techniques will allow the class to run smoothly to allow the maximum learning
experience for the students.

Lesson Plan

Introduction

Refer back to the previous writing assignment, which asked the

students to write a 15 to 20 line text on a creepy motel. A lot
of the students used words such as creepy, spooky, or
scary without giving any descriptions on why it feels this
way. The students will also be notified that through avoiding
the show, dont tell comments; they are entitled to a higher
grade in their written assignments!

Duration
75 minutes

15-20 minutes

The attention grabber for this class is using excerpts of the

Harry Potter series then showing the clips from the movie. An
excrpt from the Hobbit may also be presented to the students
(source: http://helpforteachers.hubpages.com/hub/Scenes-from-Harry-Potterto-help-with-descriptive-work-in-your-class-Castle-descriptions)

Development
The students will each get a hand out on descriptive writing.
The class will follow the first three introductory pages
together. They will then work in groups of two or three to fill
out the diagram in their handouts after which the class will
correct as a group.
45 minutes
This will repeat for all three sections of the document
(describing people, describing objects, and describing places).
Once the three sections have been finished, the students will
play a game of broken telephone to demonstrate their

3
understanding of the class.

Closure

Homework

The students will then complete the last activity, consisting of

becoming a hypnotist who must give vivid description of an
imaginative world.
Thank the students for the participation.
Remind students to refer back to this lesson when they
write to prevent the Show, dont tell comment in their
text.
Give the date of their next verb test.
Complete the text if they have not done so and submit it the

5 minutes

following class.
