Artifact Title: Tutoring Kindergartners

Date: Senior Year of High School (2012-2013)
Artifact Description:
The artifact I have is a letter from the teacher that I helped tutor kids
with. I also helped out one of her earlier classes when I was in 8th
grade. The kids would have to go into their literacy circles. I would be
with one or two groups a day helping them. I also helped out with the
setting up of art time and projects. This experience encouraged me to
go into this major with high hopes of being just as great of a teacher as
my mentor was.

Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This experience best aligns with Standard 10: Collaboration- The
teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and
agencies in the larger community to support students learning and
well-being. This best aligns with Standard 10 because being a kid in
high school helped me to identify with the kids about the things they
may have been struggling with. When I went into the other room with
the kids, I didnt know what they were struggling with. After I worked
with those kids though, I knew that they wanted to learn; they were
just having some trouble communicating what they wanted. When
going into groups, I could help all the kids that needed it and see the
others excel at whatever they were doing. When a certain child would
act out, I would understand why when he trusted me enough to tell
myself and of course the teacher I was working with. I think that me
being there every day helped the students learn to trust me and want
my help when they needed it. As a result of this experience, I learned
how to collaborate with the teacher I had as a mentor to foster to the
that childs needs and how to handle that child in a situation where
he/she needed that help.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill,
Disposition Statement Alignment
This experience to me best aligns with KSD4.e of the UWP School of
Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition statement which states
that: The candidate is aware of opportunities for professional
development to improve content knowledge and pedagogical skills and

can take an active role in assisting other educators. I felt this

experience really helped me grow up just a little more each time I
tutored a group of kids. Also, during this experience, I learned how to
be a professional and use this to talk to my mentor with other ideas
that could be used in the classroom. With me being in a separate room
working with a smaller group of kids, I could easily see that they were
more comfortable being in small groups and talking about something
then they were in a larger group. After the first experience tutoring in
8th grade, I was more than happy to go to the same classroom my
senior year of high school.
Secondary Alignment:
KSD4.f: Shows Professionalism
KSD4.c: Communicating with Families
Reflection:
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that it is very important to be able to collaborate with
teachers and families when being a teacher. It is important to be aware
of each childs individual needs and to help that child develop a sense
of learning that makes sense to him/her. Being involved in a tutoring
program is a good way to learn more about the different needs of
children and how well they learn in different environments.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that in order to know what is really a good way to teach a
student, you have to get together with he or she either in a small
group or one-on-one and see what makes that child work. I also
learned how important it is to connect with each student and earn the
trust of him/her as well. By doing this tutoring program, I was able to
see that I can handle being entrusted with the well-being of students
and that I can be a great mentor. I learned that in order to make a
students learning experience as great as possible, you have to
collaborate with other teachers and parents in order to get the very
best for those children as well.
