owners on a global scale (Kobalt Music). AMRA will help Kobalt further expand into
the global market by helping them track their clients music with even more ease than
before. Even before AMRA they were collecting 20-30% more revenue for their artists
than most other global publishing companies. AMRA will just boost those statistics
further than anyone thought imaginable (Kobalt Music).
I had the pleasure of working at Kobalt Music Groups main office in London,
UK for my first co-op. During this time I got to learn exactly how advanced they were in
their thinking. Part of what drew me to Kobalt was how theyve completely
revolutionized the publishing industry with their technology and their complete
dedication to their clients. They sincerely want to maximize revenue for their artists and
writers, not because it looks great for them but because they truly care about their clients
and want to make a difference in the industry. Even though I was working in London, I
never once felt like I was working within the British music industry. I was constantly
working on artist campaigns and contracts for Scandinavian artists, Australian artists,
American artists, and more. Whenever I had to send out newsletters I used music from all
over the world and sent them out to contacts all over the world. The terminology in the
newsletter was never changed depending on which country I was sending them to
because the language had to be universal. It truly felt like I was a part of something
bigger, something global.
Unmistakably, through analysis of the academic and the professional language
used in the discourse communities of the music industry, there is a globalized trend. Even
though Kobalt is an extreme example of the globalization in music, it is definitely the
future of the industry. This also can be said of Northeasterns Music Industry students.

Graduates of the program will be working for companies, like Kobalt, that think in the
global context to connect numerous national music industries. Even though Kobalt is
clearly more outspoken about their global goals and ideas, Northeasterns implied
approach is just as effective. The students in the Bachelors and Masters degree
programs are already thinking in a globalized context by nature of the programs they are
enrolled in. The students who apply themselves and look into the outside world of the
music industry, to companies like Kobalt, will learn from them as well as decide who
they will become in the industry upon graduation. Hopefully, they will take the lead from
forward thinking companies like Kobalt and create a place for themselves in the global
market.
