How do we use geographic tools to get us from one
place to another?
What are the various types of tools we can use?

Students will individually correctly follow the directions

and draw trails from one place to another 4/5 times.

Formative: As students are completing the activity,

they will be assessed on completion.
Summative: Students will be given a quiz on the
various geographic tools that can be used for
navigation.
ISTE: Research & Information Fluency: Students will
have to be fluent in the directional terms in order to
determine what direction they are traveling in.
ISTE: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, & Decision
Making: Students will have to critical think by deciding
what direction they are going. Because some directions
could be borderline, for example, going south versus
southeast, students will have to decide if the direction
they are traveling is moving up/down and/or side to
side.

ac2d304d91ca This Nearpod lesson is about the
back roads of Pennsylvania. Because it is often
assumed that Pennsylvania is mostly an urban
state, it may be a surprise to students and a
learning experience to find out more about the
back roads of rural PA.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Ask students to reminisce (and share if they feel
compelled) about a time they took a trip just in
Pennsylvania.

Modeling of the Concept

I will demonstrate using the paperclips how to
measure from given points A & B and what
direction Im going in, in a different state as to
not give away any PA travel point pairs.
Guiding the Practice
We will complete one together on the PA map.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will be given a 24x12 map of Pennsylvania.
They will also be given a list of pairs of places in PA.
They will have to measure, using paperclips, the
distance between point A and point B. They will record
the distance between the points in how many paperclips
it took to get from each point. They will also record the
direction (N, E, S, W, NE, SE, NW, & SW) using the
compass provided. They will be given 5 different

traveling point pairs.
