Peer Reviews Unit 3

1. After reading this document, how would you describe the current rhetorical
situation of the topic addressed? How does the document make it clear, in the
document itself, what exigency inspired the writing of the document? How
does it establish a motive that shows why the audience isnt already
convinced or aware of its argument? If any of these elements are lacking or
weak, how would you suggest that the author improves them?
Rhetoric is a form of communication to alter the perspective of others. This movie
review is aimed to inform and persuade the reader to watch the movie Creed, and
this is done at a great level.
The review is lacking an establishment that shows why the audience isnt already
aware of the argument. Therefore, when composing the review, create an original
thesis that coincides with your analysis. You can start off by choosing a unique
perspective that you have gained from watching the movie, and from that
construct a review based on that. Come up with a central idea to discuss, and be
able to provide evidence to support your argument. Make sure to include the
thesis in the first paragraph of your review. This will allow to to drive the review
into the realm of critique.
However, after reading the review, I am intrigued by this movie, and it had done
its job to persuade me to watch it.
2. How does this document engage with the chosen audience? How does it
appeal to their wants and needs? In your best analysis, does it speak to their
knowledge base, or does it explain things they already know (or not explain
something enough)? Again, if there are elements of the audience analysis that
could be improved, explain how you would do that.
A good movie review should persuade and inform the reader about the chosen
movie, offering a unique opinion and voice, without giving away too much of the
plot. So to help engage the audience, the reader can establish its opinion on the
movie closer towards the beginning of the review, to help eliminate the reader
guessing whether he likes the movie. To help with this, the author can use a score
out of 10 to express their thoughts. Subsequently, explain why you chose that
rating.
3. Whats the purpose of this document, and how is it made clear? What choices
does the author make (including design, rhetorical appeals, evidence, and
anything else you notice) to achieve this purpose? Most importantly, do you
think this document would be successful in achieving its purpose? Why or
why not?

The purpose of this document is a movie review, and it was made apparent at the
beginning of the review, The moment audiences started watching the trailer for
this movie. To help enhance the design of this review, the author should include
pictures of the characters, or significant scenes from the movie. However make
sure that these images are relevant and professional in terms of their relation to
the argument presented. The author uses sneak peeks from the movie, as well as
description of the characters, author, and comparisons to other movies directed by
the same director to provide evidence and facts to achieve its purpose of a book
review, and support the argument.
4. Is the essay well organized? Does each paragraph discuss one topic,
introduced by a topic sentence? Is there a clear paragraph structure, and
transitions between the paragraphs? How would you recommend outlining
this essay?
Generally, this essay is semi-organized, but not in a very strong approach,
because there are no topic sentences to guide the reader progressively throughout
the essay. Whilst reading the review, there appears to be minimal flow and
transition from one one paragraph to the next, which accumulates to the
dysfunction of the overall structure. There also appears to be very small
paragraphs in between larger ones. These can either be extended further by
enhancing what the writer has to say, or they can be merged to other relevant
paragraphs, to present a clearer interpretation to the reader. Additionally, I advise
the author to include transition of words, so for example, the another can include a
topic sentence, and integrate transition words like in contrast, alongside,
similarly, on the other hand, This article has clearly identified, etc.
Noticeable from the start is the absence of a strong and intriguing title. Therefore,
to immediately attract the reader, an enticing title should be added that
summarizes the review.
5. How is the writing style of the document? Is the voice confident and clear?
How would you describe the persona of this document (which may evolve
throughout the course of the document)? Are there specific moments where
the persona shifts randomly? Finally, are there any grammatical issues the
author needs to be aware of?
Throughout the review, the authors writing style is clear and concise, helping
create a sense of ease for the reader. However, because of this minimalism and
casual feel, by integrating stronger vocabulary, a stronger document will be
produced, along with deeper thoughts and ideas. Based on what the author had to
say, it is evident that he is knowledgeable about that movie. The author can give
its review a personality by offering a more humor writing style, or move towards
a more dramatic approach.

After reading this document, how would you describe the

current rhetorical situation of the topic addressed? How does
the document make it clear, in the document itself, what
exigency inspired the writing of the document? How does it
establish a motive that shows why the audience isnt already
convinced or aware of its argument? If any of these elements
are lacking or weak, how would you suggest that the author
improves them?

The author did a good job in writing this movie review called Creed.
The current purpose of this document is written to inform and
persuade people to watch this movie and I think that he was pretty
successful on it. The document says very clearly that the movie is very
worthy to watch especially for people who are fans of Rocky and who
like boxing. Also, who watched the series or Rocky before, they should
watch Creed because it is considered as the continuation of the Rocky
series. However, I think that the document is lacking the motive that
why the audience is not already convinced of its argument. So, I
would suggest writing the argument that the audience is not
convinced. Also, I recommend following the thesis while writing the
document because the thesis is what lead to the document.
Nevertheless, the review was very successful in persuading people to
watch it since personally, after I have read the review, I am convinced
to watch it.

How does this document engage with the chosen audience?

How does it appeal to their wants and needs? In your best
analysis, does it speak to their knowledge base, or does it
explain things they already know (or not explain something
enough)? Again, if there are elements of the audience analysis
that could be improved, explain how you would do that.

The audience might be people who are fans of Rocky or even people
who like watching boxing. The audience definitely wants to know if
the movie is worth to watch or not. So, I think that the author did a
good job in explaining and persuading people about the movie. Even
though he talked a lot of interesting things of the movie, but I think
that he still lacks a little bit of audience engagement. Also, I
recommend talking a little bit more about the some specific part of
the movie or even the beginning of the movie plot, and give personal
opinion about it. However, do not reveal too much information
because it will cause the audience to guess about the movie.

Whats the purpose of this document, and how is it made clear?

What choices does the author make (including design, rhetorical
appeals, evidence, and anything else you notice) to achieve this
purpose? Most importantly, do you think this document would
be successful in achieving its purpose? Why or why not?

The purpose of this document is a movie review. It is made clear by

looking at the first paragraph where he talked about watching a
thriller of a movie. The author used evidences by mentioning the
characters of the movie and describing them. Also, he made
comparisons of this movie with other similar movies acted by the
same actors. However, I would suggest putting some images about the
movie and that are related to your argument. I think that this
document would be successful in achieving its purpose because he
has done a great job in persuading people to watch it by giving some
good evidences and telling how great the movie is.
Is the essay well organized? Does each paragraph discuss one
topic, introduced by a topic sentence? Is there a clear
paragraph structure, and transitions between the paragraphs?
How would you recommend outlining this essay?
Speaking of structure, I think that the author discussed one topic in
each paragraph. However, I might say that the structure is not very
strong because the paragraphs are not introduced with a topic
sentence, so the readers do not know what the paragraph is going to
talk about. Also, I would suggest using transitions words between the
paragraphs, such as Moreover, Similarly, On the other hand,
etc. So, adding transitions and topic sentences in each paragraph will
make the structure stronger with a good flow.

How is the writing style of the document? Is the voice confident

and clear? How would you describe the persona of this
document (which may evolve throughout the course of the
document)? Are there specific moments where the persona
shifts randomly? Finally, are there any grammatical issues the
author needs to be aware of?

The writing style of the document is pretty clear. The voice was
confident, so this shows that the author was pretty familiar and
knowledgeable about the topic that he was talking about. The persona
of this document was kind of excited since he showed sympathy about
the movie. The grammar was fine since I was able to understand what
the author wanted to say.
