Why is it important for children to be able to decode unfamiliar words?

Rationale:
By now, students are picking up speed as they decode words. The self-sufficiency that a controlled
vocabulary program instills in beginning readers is perhaps it's greatest single emotional effect.
Students will begin to learn some memory words. These are words that students must memorize
because they cant blend or decode them yet.
Objective:
Today we will... identify the title of a story and track from left to right.
So that you can... answer questions about a story.
I'll know you have it when... Students can re-read story using their fingers to track and identify
the word "the"
Opening Question / Activity:
I will say a word and the students will say a rhyming word that begins with /h/
fall- top den sang gold land furry candle
