Introduction
Oceancurrentsprofoundlyaffecttheweather,marinetransportation,andthecyclingofnutrients.Deepoceancurrents
aredrivenbydifferencesinthewater'sdensity.Thewater'sdensityiscontrolledbytemperature(coldwaterisdenser
thanwarmwater)andsalinity(saltywaterisdenserthanfreshwater).
Howdoesthevaryingdensityoftheoceanswaterscreatetheglobalcurrents?Tounderstandthedeepoceancurrents,
itiseasiesttolookfirstatEarth'spolarregions.Waterflowingintothepolarregionsbecomescold,whichincreasesits
density.Asiceisformedwhenthewaterfreezes,freshwaterisremovedfromtheocean(ithasturnedintoice),making
theoceanwatersaltier.Thecoldwaterisnowdenser,duetotheaddedsalts,thusitsinkstowardtheoceanbottom.
