Dear GEICO Achievement Award Selection Committee: I am delighted to write a letter of recommendation for Ms. Frances Coronel, who is applying for the 2015 GEICO Achievement Award. Frances is a full-time junior undergraduate, pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Hampton University (HU), where she started Spring 2014. Frances spent Fall 2014 studying abroad in Germany. I have known Frances as her Academic Advisor and then in Summer 2014 as her instructor, when she took Computer Programming II (CSC 152) with me. Though a bit reserved in the classroom, Frances has always asked for help when she needs it. She proudly earned an A- from CSC 152. With me this semester, she is taking CSC 210 (C++ Unix Programming) and CSC 395 (Web and Mobile Apps). As of right now, her cumulative GPA is a 3.58 on a 4.1 scale. Her outstanding academic performance has recently placed her in the Golden Key Honor Society and Frances has been on the Deans List every semester since her first at HU. This year, Frances has been appointed as the Vice-President of the Women in Computing Club. Frances is also the Website Committee Chair of and a member of the Associate in Computing Machinery (ACM) HU Student Chapter as well as HU STARS (Student & Technology in Academia, Research, & Service) Leadership Corps, where she serves as one of the departments peer tutors and as a mentor to incoming freshmen. In addition, Frances received the travel scholarship support from the conference organizers to attend the 2015 ACM Richard Tapia Conference (Boston, MA) and 2015 Association for the Advancement of Artificial (AAAI) Conference (Austin, TX). Frances is a bright, talented, young, Hispanic, female Computer Science student, who strives to do her very best in academia as well as in her participation in various outside classroom activities. It is very rare to have female students majoring in Computer Science and rarer still to do well. Frances truly deserves to be recognized for her hardworking ethic and numerous accomplishments. Therefore, I strongly recommend Ms. Frances Coronel for the 2015 GEICO Achievement Award. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at chutima.boonthum@hamptonu.edu or at (757) 727-5082. Sincerely,
Chutima Boonthum-Denecke, Ph.D.
