Rationale
What are the specific knowledge/skills/attitudes demonstrated in this outcome?
Why is it a foundational or advanced outcome?
How does this relate/contribute to other courses in the program?
-

Student will need to demonstrate an understanding of foundational OT

theory and be able to apply this to common musculoskeletal (MSK)
conditions.
This is a lower, more foundational level of knowledge, however students will
be required to apply this in specific conditions, therefore this increases the
level to a medium level.
This course is in the second semester of a four semester program and
provides an introduction to occupational therapy theory and enabling
occupation.
Student will need to demonstrate an understanding of occupational
performance components and their relationship to functioning and
participation. They will also need to understand the connection between
these performance components and interventions used by OT in treating
MSK conditions.
This is foundational because students are expected to know and be able to
describe these factors, but they do not need to apply these independently at
this stage.
This course is in the second semester of a four semester program and
provides an introduction to occupational therapy theory and enabling
occupation.
Students will have knowledge of the OT scope of practice, the benefits of
treatment for patients with MSK conditions and be able to communicate
these clearly to various individuals (tailored to different levels).
This CLO implies knowledge and application as well as skillful tailoring of
this information to meet client needs, therefore this represents an application
level, or a medium level.

Rationale
How does each outcome contribute to or meet your Program Learning Outcomes?
This outcome is focused on OT theory and its application to musculoskeletal
conditions. This aligns well with PLO 8, which focuses on the application of relevant
knowledge to specific health conditions. Further, PLO 10 applies because this goal
focuses on OT theory and enabling occupation by applying a relevant body of

conditions.

knowledge.

This course specific learning outcome relates to PLO 10, because students will need
to understand occupational performance components and their functional
implications for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions in order to enable their
occupational performance and contribute to treatments plans/deliver (as specified in
PLO 10).

This course specific learning outcome relates to PLO 1, as students will be expected
to express the benefits of OT theory to patients, which implies OT scope of practice
knowledge and appropriate, effective communication with patients, their families, and
shared decision makers.
