Badminton: Forehand and Backhand

5th Grade

20 students

Instructional Objectives/Student Outcomes

Students will be able to identify and perform the forehand and backhand badminton hits.

WV CSOs

PE 5.1.03: Students will strike with an implement using force and accuracy (i.e., bat and
softball, racquetball).
PE 5.2.01: Students will identify critical elements or components for dribbling with feet,
striking with racquets and striking with longhandled implements (e.g.,bats, sticks, clubs).

NASPE Standards

Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of


motor skills and movement patterns.

Rationale
Mastery of the forehand and backhand in badminton is important because they are the primary
stroke types used in badminton. These skills are also important to master because it improves
motor skills dealing with striking an object with an implement (the racquet).
Anticipatory Set

Badminton was not invented by one specific person. It has evolved from a game that was

thought to have originated in China in the 5th century.


Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the world.
The forehand and backhand are the most commonly used strokes in badminton.
Forehand consists of the racquet being swung on the side of the hand that is holding it.
Backhand consists of the racquet being swung on the opposite side of the hand that is
holding it.

Management Framework

Introductory Activity: History of Badminton 2-3 minutes


Fitness Activity: Jog around gym/court 5-7 minutes
Lesson Focus: Practice forehands and backhands with partner 15-18 minutes
Closing Activity: Walk around gym 2-5 minutes

Equipment Required

20 badminton racquets

10 shuttlecocks

Adaptations for Special Needs

Visually impaired students could use a bigger, softer, colorful ball instead of the
shuttlecock to allow them to see it better.

Diversity

Race/Ethnicity: Every race and ethnicity plays badminton. It is an Olympic sport, so

therefore it brings many nations together.


Gender: Badminton can be played by both men and women. There are also coed

leagues and teams.


Social Class: Badminton does not require any expensive equipment so it can be played

by any social class.


Ability: Badminton is generally played as a team game so teams can be evened out
based on ability. Also, badminton is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, so ability is not
important in recreational leagues.

Content Sequence of Material


Introductory Activity- (History of Badminton and information on forehand and
backhand, 2-3 Minutes)

Fitness Activity- (Jog around Gym/Court, 5-7 minutes)

Have the class do a light jog around the gym or court to get warmed-up and avoid
injury.

Lesson Focus- (Forehand and Backhand, 15-18 minutes)

The forehand consists of a flick of the wrist with the racquet on the same side of
the body as the arm that is holding it. For example, if the racquet is in the right
hand, a forehand would be hit on the right side of the body.

The backhand consists of a flick of the wrist with the racquet on the opposite side
of the body as the arm that is holding it. For example, if the racquet is in the right

hand, a backhand would be hit on the left side of the body.


Have everyone in the class find a partner.
Have the partners practice hitting forehands to one another.
Have the partners practice hitting backhands to one another.
Have the class play a live game to practice their skills in real world applications

Closing Activity (Walk around Gym, 2-5 minutes)

The class will walk around the gym or court to cool-down.

If Lesson Finishes Early

The class will continue playing the game using their forehand and backhand skills
until class is over.

Assessment of Lesson

Objective: Students will be able to identify and perform the forehand and
backhand badminton hits.
Have each student demonstrate and perform a forehand and backhand before they
leave the class.
