Mitosis and Meiosis Webquest

Biology

Name: ___Tyshawn Poe___

Date: _4/16/2016___ Period: __1_

Objective: In this activity, you will use the following web pages to examine the processes of mitosis and meiosis. Both
of these processes are important in homeostasis as well as human reproduction.
PART A: Cell Growth and Mitosis
Please go to the following webpage: http://plaza.ufl.edu/alallen/pgl/modules/rio/stingarees/module/index.html
1. What is the function of the cell membrane related cell division? the main function is to control what goes in
and out of the cell.
1. What is the role of the nucleus in cell division? The nucleus is the control center of the cell.
1. What is the role of the centrioles in cell division? Centrioles are paired organelles that are in the cytoplasm
only to take part in cell division, first they duplicate and then each pair moves to a place called the pole
of the cell and seems to anchor the spindle fibers.
1. What is the role of the microtubules in cell division? Microtubules are miniature tubes that act as the skeleton
of the cell, just like our skeleton holds us together.

Click on the tab, Why Must Cells Divide?

1. Why are cells limited in size? Cells are limited in size because the outside (the cell membrane) must
transport the food and oxygen to the parts inside. As a cell gets bigger, the outside is unable to keep
up with the inside, because the inside grows a faster rate than the outside.
Click on the animation. A cell with 2cm sides has what surface area? _24cm2__What volume? _8cm2_____
1.

What would be the surface to volume ratio? _____3____________________________________

1. A cell with a large volume will have a more difficult time doing what? _more difficult time getting materials in and waste
products out.
Click on the tab, What Does Mitosis Do?
1. What are the 2 major functions of mitosis? ____growth and repair_______________________
Click on the tab, Built-in Controls in Mitosis
1. What are the 2 ways that cells know to stop dividing? __ The cells communicate with each other to end the
division. There are also other controls called "go, no-go" switches. These are located along the path
that the cell cycle takes, thus to continue or discontinue the process of cell division.
Please go to the following webpage: http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/BIOBK/BioBookmito.html
1. What ends the cell division process where one cell splits from the sister cell? Cytokinesis is the process where one
cell splits off from its sister cell._____

1. Some cells divide rapidly. Example? __beans, for example take 19 hours for the complete cycle; red blood cells must
divide at a rate of 2.5 million per second____________ Some cells do not divide at all after maturity. Example? _____
nerve cells_______
1. What is the result of binary fission (genetically the same or different)? _ results in two identical daughter cells. This is
a type of asexual reproduction, or creating genetically identical offspring.________
1. What is the genetic relationship between resulting cells in mitosis (genetically the same or different)? _THE goal of
mitosis is to make sure that when a cell replicates, it gets the same genotype as the parent. Mitosis goes through four
stages ____________________________________________
2. Label the following steps of mitosis:

PART B: Meiosis
Please go to the following webpage: http://www.cellsalive.com/meiosis.htm
1. Why is the meiosis important? _____Meiosis is important in assuring genetic diversity in sexual
reproduction._______________________________________________
1. Start the animation. What do the chromosomes do in Prophase 1? ___ Chromosomes become visible, crossing-over
occurs, the nucleolus disappears, the meiotic spindle forms, and the nuclear envelope
disappears.________________________
1. Compare how chromosomes line up on the equator (for separation) in Metaphase 1 and 2?
___1 is lined up vertically and 2 is lined up horizontally.________________________ ______
__________________________________________________________________________________
1. In which phase are the number of chromosomes divided in half as a reduction division(Meiosis 1 or 2)?
_phase 2____
1. Label the following steps of Meiosis: http://www.accessexcellence.org/RC/VL/GG/meiosis.html

After visiting the web pages above, compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis.
Then, create a Venn Diagram of the terms listed below. You will turn the Venn Diagram in to me at the end of
class. If an item does not belong put it in a list titled Does Not Belong.
