Jon Krakauer has written over 25 books and is well known for writing about the outdoors, and
survival. Jon Krakauer was part of the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster, one of the deadliest
disasters of all time. He received the award, New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year.
Book source: Into the Wild is a book written about the adventure of a boy named Chris
McCandless. Chris up and left home one day, without telling anyone, in order to find his true
self, and to escape from the society he was living in. Chris burned all of his money and lived
solely off the land and with the people he came in contact with, while on this journey of selfactualization. In Chriss backstory, he talks about how much he disagreed with society and his
parents, and how he would have been considered an outcast if he truly knew how to express
himself. Chris needed a getaway to find out what it was he really wanted from his life. Chris
really loved traveling and did not like following societal norms, which made traveling across
American a perfect trip for Chris. Chris was a determined young man, as well as seemingly hardheaded. Chris soaked up all the knowledge of anyone and everyone around him, and really was a
smart kid with a lot of potential. At the same time, Chris stubbornness always convinced him to
do what he wanted, no matter how many people advised against it. Chris used his determination
to achieve his goal of reaching Alaska, but was a bit unprepared.
This book relates to my paper, because Chris did not agree with how his family and the society
he lived in, worked. In my paper, I talk about societal norms and what they mean, as well as how
people look upon. I also talk about what it means to be normal, and what the different types of
normal are, because it goes hand in hand with societal norms. I can relate Chris to my paper,
because he went on a journey to get away from society, which raises the question of why, as well
as, does everybody think like him, or is he one of a kind. This book helps connect the dots and
give me an example when talking about the fitting in society and finding your purpose in life as
well as finding the people you find normal, whether other people do too, or not. This book is the
basis of my extended inquiry top, and has given me a lot of information and insight to how many
people feel about social norms, and what they really mean.
Reflection: Into the Wild focuses on two main things: the adventure of Chris McCandless, and
the self-realizations or Chris McCandless. These two things are very different, as one is just his
journey across the land running into many people and building relationships with them. The
other part of the story, is what you get when you look deeper into the words of the book. Chris
McCandless went on this trip in order to find out who he really was, and through his journey and
every relationship he built, I truly believe that he found his true being. This text is based on a true
story using references of people Chris actually ran into.
McCandless, Carine. The Wild Truth. N.p.: n.p., n.d. Print.
The author, Carine McCandless, is the younger sister of Chris McCandless. Carine has only
written a few books, all of which are about her brother. Carine grew up in the same household as

Chris, which allows her to give a good representation of Chris, as well as allows her to know the
entire backstory and be a reliable primary source.
Primary Source: The Wild Truth is a book written about Chris McCandless, but his sister Carine.
In this book, Carine talks about what it is her brother was running from, and why he just took off.
She talks about their childhood, which was rather miserable, going into the abuse from her father
and the divorce and affairs between her parents. Carine also talks about how later in their teenage
years, how they find out that their dad has a kid with another woman, when he was having an
affair while married to their mother. Because of all of these problems in their childhood, Carine
and Chris held an angry and bitter feeling towards their father. This helps explain and show what
Chris was thinking when he ran away from home and did not tell anyone. At the same time, she
straightens out the story about her brother and her brothers death.
This relates to my paper, because in the book, Carine talks about what her brother was running
from and why he left. My paper consists of societal norms and how Chris felt about them and
how they affected him. Secondly, my inquiry talks about why Chris ran away from home, why he
hated living at home as much as he did, and lastly, why he ran away from all of society and
civilization. Carine and Chris were very close, so this book allows and inside look to the life
Chris was living and some of the reasons he would have wanted to run away. Carine explains in
her book their childhood and everything I needed to know about Chris, giving me a really good
idea of Chris. This book also gave me many examples of how to use him in my extended inquiry
as a main topic.
Reflection: This book is a book that was written in order to do two things: set the story straight
about Chris McCandless death thousands of people, as well as the show her audience why her
brother ran away and how rough their childhood was. In this book Carine accepts Chris journey
as trying to make a clean break from their parents, rather than abandoning her family. This book
was not written to make money or impress anyone. I personally think that Carine did a great job
of succeeding at doing what she was intending to do.
McLeod, Saul. "Social Rules." And Social Norms. N.p., 2008. Web. 19 Apr. 2016.
Saul McLeod has a degree in psychology and has a masters degree in research. He is also
undertaking a PhD part time at The University of Manchester. He started the website, Simply
Psychology, in 2007 by uploading some of my teaching notes online to a free website provided
by my cable TV company.
Secondary Source: This website is a website full of information regarding psychology. This site
helped me a lot, because the creator of the site, Saul McLeod, had an article about specifically
about social norms. This directly related to me paper, because it talked about what social norms
actually are; as well as, it talked about how social norms affected people and how they play a
huge role in society, both negative and positive. This article helped me, because it allowed me to
insert a quote from the author of the site, backing up and supporting my statement about what
norms were and how they affect society. Also, this site gave me multiple ideas of things to talk
about and gave me a larger understanding of societal norms and the positive and negative effects
of them and how they impact society in more than just one way.

This relates to my paper, because Saul McLeod is a psychologist who specifically address what
social norms are and what affect they have as a whole. He explains more in depth about social
norms to help the reader understand more about this topic. Also, since he is a psychologist, he is
able to talk about the effects that norms have on people and how it makes people feel and how it
makes society work.
Reflection: This website was a very convenient and informative website. In addition to this, this
website was able to provide me with an article that directly correlated with my topic, for my
extended inquiry. I was able to learn more about this topic, for myself, as well as inform other
people about more information. This site allowed me to use it as proof for my argument,
strengthen my points of origin as well as my argument.
Chris McCandless. Digital image. Spiegel Online. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 Apr. 2016.
This was a picture, of Chris McCandless, and had no specific author or photographer. This photo
is from the Chris McCandless Memorial Foundation, and was a picture of Chris after he departed
into the wilderness. This self-timer portrait showed him with the prey he had caught. This
foundation was made specifically for Chris which makes it more likely to be an accurate
representation of Chris and how he was living.
Internet Source: This photo was a photo of Chris in the wilderness. This photo was a
representation of how Chris was feeling, as well as, where he was at the time. This photo came
from the Chris McCandless Memorial Foundation, in order to help show people more about
Chris and how he was as a person, as much as a picture can. This photo is showing how Chris is
doing in the wilderness both mentally and physically. This picture also shows that Chris has been
able to catch food and survive in the wilderness up to this point in time.
This picture helped in my extended inquiry, because it allowed me to tie in an actual photograph
of Chris, into my argument. This picture allowed me to show the emotions Chris was feeling, as
well as prove where he was and how he had changed physically and mentally. This photo was
able to show that its up to you to decide what you make of life and that if you do what you enjoy
and not listen to other people, you will find people who think you are normal.
Reflection: I enjoyed this photo a lot, and I feel it really represented how Chris felt, being in the
wild. This photo shows that Chris really did need to go find himself and that Chris really did
want more than a society that expected you to be like everyone else, in it. This helped me tie my
argument together and allow me to show the real Chris McCandless to everyone who sees my
inquiry.
Maisel, Eric R. "What Do We Mean by 'Normal'? Psychology Today. N.p., 15 Nov. 2011. Web.
19 Apr. 2016.
Eric Maisel, Ph.D., is the author of forty books. He is a California licensed psychotherapist and
writes regularly for the Huffington Post and Professional Artist Magazine. Some of Maisels
books include: Rethinking Depression, The Van Gogh Blues, Mastering Creative
Anxiety, and Coaching The Artist Within.

Secondary Source: This article was an article on a psychology website, written by Eric Maisel,
Ph.D. This article was a great article for my research of What is Normal. This article was about
what the difference in normal and abnormal are and how the relate to society. Eric Maisel
discusses what he thinks the real meaning of the word normal and abnormal mean. Eric Maisel
talks about how we think about what we mean by the words "normal" and "abnormal" as those
words apply to the mental and emotional states and behaviors of human beings. He also
addresses how we cannot describe normal as a mere statistic. At one point, the article also asks, if
normal is not the majority of something, then what exactly is a way to tell if something is normal
or if something is abnormal.
This directly relates to my extended inquiry, because it is an article solely on what normal and
abnormal is and what they mean. In my extended inquiry, I discuss what I find out in this
psychology article based on Eric Maisel, Ph.D. For the most part, I personally agree with what
Eric Maisel labels the word normal and abnormal as. This article goes hand in hand, as a
subtopic in my main topic on my extended inquiry.
Reflection: I enjoyed this article, for multiple reasons. This article was interesting, because I
have always found the word normal strange. I dont understand the word normal, because who
decides what normal and abnormal means? How can you tell what people are normal and
abnormal? This article addressed this topic and came up with a widely accepted definition of
what those two words mean. In addition, this article then proceeded to explain why these words
mean what they mean.
"Social Norms." GoodTherapy.org Therapy Blog. N.p., 31 Mar. 2015. Web. 19 Apr. 2016.
GoodTherapy is a website with no direct author on the article, that rather uses sources to write a
full article. The motto on the GoodTherapy website is: Helping people find therapists.
Advocating for ethical therapy. This motto shows that this site is for more than just articles, and
you can also contact therapists and psychologists. This means that this site has a reliable and
diverse background.
Secondary Source: This article was an informative article, talking about the positives and
negatives behind social norms. This article laid out what social norms were, and then continued
to show you how they can be negative and positive with examples of each. This article says that
social norms are a broad set of prescriptions, both explicit and implicit, that dictate behavior in
particular situations.
This article relates to my extended inquiry because this article helps me inform people on the
positive and negative effects of social norms. Typically, when someone hears the social norms,
myself included, they think of conformity. They also think of the word social norms as a word
with negative connotation.
Reflection: I enjoyed this article for multiple reasons. This article was able to open me up to
realizing that social norms do not always have to have a negative connotation and that it can be
positive to have social norms in a society. At the same time, this article also reassured me that
social norms can have a negative effect on society and can be harmful. This article showed both

sides of social norms and allowed you to see the good and bad behind them and make a decision
for yourself on how you feel about them.
