Discussion #5: Emergency Care Plan
In case of accident in the physical education class:
Emergency Personnel: A certified Athletic Trainer, head Coach and assistant Coach will be on
site at all times. The schools responding physician will be in direct contact at all time (he/she will
coincide with the schools insurance policy as well as others.)
Emergency Communication: All certified Athletic Trainers, heal Coaches, and assistant
Coaches are required to have some form of communication on them at all times such as a walkietalkie/radio or cell phone. There is also a land-line telephone in the coaching office and
gymnasium facility.
Emergency Equipment: First aid kit, AED, trauma kit, splint kit, and other equipment such as
light sticks/glow wands, flashlights, etc. will be held in the gym, coachs office, and other
surrounding areas in the school.
Emergency Transport: 911 will be called for any emergency event. A responding
vehicle/ambulance will be permitted and required under any unconscious events. They will be
made available by the city once 911 is called for any other sports/physical education related
injury. If the parents do not wish to have their child transported for specific injuries other than
during an unconscious event where it is required, they must provide the transportation
themselves.
First Responder Role:
- Instant care of the injured.
- Must retrieve any and all first aid equipment required.
- Contact with emergency system- 911.
- Name, location, number, individual injured, injury, treatment conducted, directions
and other info required from personnel must be stated.
- Contact with parent or guardian is required.
- Documentation of the event is required.
For Non-Emergency Situations:
- Similar actions will be taken as those stated above for emergency care.
- Immediate care will be given and any first aid responses will be taken care of.
- Contact with the school nurse and parent/guardian must take place.
- Transportation is required via the parents/guardians.
- Documentation must be done.
