Mytimewassplitbetweenactiveobserving,leadinganumberofactivitiesacross5ofour
classes,andgradingaseriesoftestsweadministeredtoAdvancedU.S.Historyand(regular)
U.S.History.Theactiveobservinghadmeassistingwithvariousactivitiesorlecturesmy
mentorwascarryingout.Iwouldaddinmaterialorask/answeradditionalquestions,asa
supplementtotheformalizedcontentbeingaddressed.Forexample,whenworkingwithour
APUSHclassesonwritingaDBQassignment,Ispoketothemaboutmypersonalexperiences
writingDBQsandwhatstylesandstrategiesIutilized.Iadditionally,Iledanumberof
activities,for(regular)U.S.HistoryandAPUSH.InU.S.history,Iledandranareviewof
PresidentHooversGreatDepressionresponseandpolicies.Thisinvolvedquestioningand
discussion,toelicitresponsesfromthestudents.InAPUSH,Iledanactivityofanalyzing
documentsinpreparationforaDBQassignment.Thisalsoentailedquestioninganddiscussion,
aswellasrepeateduseofrephrasingmequestions,sinceIhadtokeepchangingmequestionsto
receiveanswersfrommystudents,withoutprovidingthemtheanswers.Lastly,Ihavebeen
gradingunittestsfromtheU.S.andAdv.U.S.Historyclasses.Thesetests,beingshortanswer
response,requireadedicatedattemptatobjectivegrading,evenwhenthequestionscanbe
subjective.
2. Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallenging
experiences?
Probablythebestthingaboutthisweekwasseeinghowmyabilitytoledactivitiesimproved,
fromthefirsttimeIledtothelasttime.Forexample,theAPUSHDBQanalysisIled,I
struggledwithgettingstudentstorespondandwithphrasingmequestionsinwaysthatwere
openendedandallowedforthestudentstodemonstratetheirdeeperthinking,relatingtothe
documents.Bytheendoftheweek,doingthiswassignificantlyeasierandthestudentswere
noticeablymorecomfortableansweringmyquestionsandprovidinginformation.
ThegreatestchallengewastheHooverreviewwiththesecondperiodclass.ThisU.S.History
classisveryquietandhighlypassive,soittooknumerousrephrasingsofthequestionsand
extendedwaittimestogetthemtorespond,iftheydidatall.Itwasadiscouragingprocess,
sinceithappenedatthebeginningoftheday.Additionally,theotherU.S.Historyclass,when
doingthesameactivity,washighlyactive,soitwasdisappointingtoseemytechniquesdoso
wellinoneclass,yetfailinanother.

IwillbetakingoverbothsectionsofU.S.History,fullingleading3daysworthoflessons.We
willbegincoveringWWII.Additionally,sincemymentorisgoingtoaconferenceattheendof
theweek,Iwillbeleadingourotherclasses.

ThisweekItookoverbothsectionsofU.S.History.Itaught2lessonstothatclass(thesnow
daythrewofftheschedulesomewhat).Additionally,sincemymentorwasgoneataconference,
IalsoledallsectionsofAPUSHandAdv.U.S.History.ForAPUSH,Iledadiscussion,aswell
aswellareviewsessionofabout15studentsduringseminar.APUSHthentookateston
Thursday/Friday.ForAdv.,theyhadworkdaysforagroupprojecttheyareworkingon.
2. Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallenging
experiences?
ThelessonItaughtonFridaytoU.S.Historywasaverydiscussionbased,interactiveactivity
whichrequiredstudentstousecriticalthinkingandanalysis.Ihadthemlistentoandthen
comparespeechfromWinstonChurchillandFDR.My6thperiodU.S.classdidaverygoodjob
andwashighlyengaged.Ihadamajorityofstudentsactivelycontributingandalmostall
commentedinsomeway.
Thegreatestchallengewasin2ndU.S.Ididthesamespeechcomparison,butthattimethe
studentswereveryflatandunengaged.Whiletheyparticipated,theydidnotseemtocare.
Discussionwaspainfulanditwasoftenthesame6or7studentscontributing,insteadofthe
majorityoftheclass.
3. Whataretheplansfortheupcomingweek?
IwillcontinuewithU.S.HistoryandtheirunitonWWII.IalsowillbegradingAPUSHtests,as
wellastheAdv.U.S.Historygroupprojects.Additionally,mymentorandIwillbegin
preparationsforconferences,whichareoccurringinthefollowingweek.

1. Howdidyouspendyourtimethisweek?Whatresponsibilitiesdidyouhave?
IcontinuedteachingmytwoU.S.Historyclasses,asweapproachtheirupcomingtest.Ihadtwo
regularlessonsforthem,involvinglecture,aswellasapairactivity,inwhichtheyworked
togethercomparing/contrastingthemilitarytheatresfromWWII.Theclassesdidwelland
workeddiligently.Ialsohadanenrichmentactivityforoneofmyclasses,since2ndperiod
missedclass,duetoaguestspeaker.ThisactivityinvolvedWWIIpropaganda,andhadthe
studentspracticingdocumentanalysisandexaminingtheoldpropagandaimages.Ialsoworked
ongradingtests,aswellasassistedAPUSHastheyworkedonagroupproject.
2. Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallenging
experiences?
Overall,IthinktheenrichmentactivityIdidwith6thperiodwasthebestlessonIvetaughtyet.
Thestudentswereengagedandveryvocalindiscussingthevariouspropagandaimages.This
allowedthemtoreallybreaktheimagesdownandexaminethecomponentsofthepropaganda.
Themostdifficultexperiencewastwofold.One,inmylessonsonThursday,theywere
progressingwell,untiltheveryend,whenmylineofquestioningwentratherofftherails.I
startedpanicking,soratherthantakingabreathandrephrasingthequestionsproperly,Istarted
justrattling(poorly)wordedquestions,confusingmystudentsevenmore.Ontopofthat,Iwas
battlingsomecoldorflu,whichdidnothelpmeonceIgotflusteredfrommakingmistakes.

Intheupcomingweek,IwillbegivingmyfirsttesttoU.S.History,soImsomewhatnervous.
WhileIthinkItaughtthematerialwell,Imstillworried.Mondaywillbewrapup,finishingthe
remainingcontentlefttobecovered,withthetestonTuesday.Conferencesarealsooccurring
Tuesday/Thursday,soIwillbeengagedwiththose.Mymentorwantsbepresent,thoughIwill
notbedirectlyconferencing,sinceIhavenotreallyhadthetime/experiencewiththestudentsto
commentaccuratelyontheirprogress.

IcontinuedteachingU.S.History,thoughitwasashortenedweekduetoconferences.I
administeredatestonTuesdayforthem,alongwith2separatelessons,onefinishingthe
remainingcontentonMonday,andthenfollowingthetest,aquicklessononwritinga
historicalthesis.Ialsoparticipatedinconferences,Tues/Thurs.Imostlyobserved,sinceI
havenotfullyhadenoughtimewiththestudentstocommentontheirprogress.ButIwas
abletomakesomelimitedcommentsregardingcertainstudents.

experiences?
Themostsatisfyingandchallengingexperiencesarethesame.IhadtowritethetestforU.S
History,whichprovedchallenging.Creatingquestionsthatwerebothfair,challenging,and
accessiblewassomethingIhaddifficultyonandIhadalotofsecondguessingmyself
throughtheprocess.Thatbeingsaid,Ifinishedgradingthetestsovertheweekendandthe
majorityofmystudentsdidwell,whichIbelieveindicatesthatItaughtthemwell,sinceI
feelthattestwasfairlydemandingofthem.

IwillbeginanewunitwithU.S.History,enteringtheColdWar,aswellasbegintoprepare
fortakingoverAdv.U.S.Historyinafewweeks.InthenewU.S.Historyclass,Imtrying
tofocusonmorestudentledactivities,tominimizethelectureormoreteacherfocused
lessonsthatIvebeenusingthelastcoupleweeks.
