Emilio Del Giudice, 19402014

The articles contained in this issue of Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine are dedicated to the memory of Emilio
Del Giudice. In all cases the authors either collaborated to some degree with him or were inspired to pursue their research by
him. Starting with his formal training in Quantum Electrodynamics, and bolstered by colleagues Vitiello and the late Preparata,
his interest in the physical basis of life became his passion. This interest was largely related to the biological questions arising
from electromagnetic effects in water, an area of research which he contributed to largely with his model describing coherent
domain formation in water.
He once told me that he derived pleasure from studying areas of research that others rejected, areas he referred to as lost
causes. Prominent among these was his long-standing interest in cold fusion. In 1985 he attended my very first talk on ion
cyclotron resonance in Erice, and was immediately strongly supportive, telling me that he thought my work was one of those lost
causes. More recently he took up another such matter, the contentious question of homeopathy, mainly because of the
observations by Montagnier. He was drawn to difficult puzzles in science like a moth to a flame, an approach that is often
avoided by the science establishment.
Even apart from his brilliance in connecting the dots and seeing beyond the rest of us, especially with regard to the connection
between electromagnetism and living things, his joyously open attitude to new ideas was something quite rare in science. He will
be sorely missed as a colleague and leader, but also as a friend.
