    science.Oneofmyteachingassignmentswasappliedchemistry.Theclassmainlyconsistedof
    juniorsandseniorswhowerewaryofthecollegepreparatorychemistrycourseandthe
    standardizedassessmentthatcamealongwithit.AsIpreparedforthenewschoolyear,I
    approachedaveteranteacherintheschoolwithquestionsaboutthecurriculumandstrategiesto
    getthebestoutofmystudents.Herresponsewasquiteshockingtome.ShestatedthatIdidnt
    needtoworryaboutteachingcertainconceptstothesekidsbecausetheyjustwerentgoingto
    college.Attemptingtogiveherthebenefitofthedoubt,Iaskedifshethoughttheywereatleast
    goingtosmallerschools,communitycollegeorhistoricallyblackcollegesoruniversities,and
    sheresponded,No.Icontinuedinmyendeavorstoreachmyappliedchemistrystudents
    withoutmuchhelpfromcoworkersandcontrarytopopularbelief,severalofmystudents
    excelledintheclassandwentontofurthertheireducationoncollegecampusesacrossNorth
    Carolina.Others,althoughtheychosedifferently,wereexposedtothecurriculumandgivenan
    equalopportunity.Ivowedthen,witharenewedsenseofwhyIteach,thatIwouldalwayssearch
    forthebestinmystudents,createasafespaceforthemtobethemselvesandpushthemto
    maximizeontheirpotential.Aseducators,weshouldnevermakeassumptionsaboutourstudents
    basedoncurrentsituations.Ifeelthatitisourresponsibilitytoestablishappropriate
    relationships,tomaintainhighexpectationsandtoteachwhatisrequiredinamannerthat
    reachesallstudentsandequipsthemtomakeinformeddecisions.
    Myvisionisthecreationofacultureofsafety,order,anexcitementforlearning,anda
    communitywheretheadministrators,facultyandstaffareconstantlymaintainingtheirabilityto
    meettheneedsofalllearnerswithaprogressive,collaborativeclimate,fairandconsistent
