This talk is for students who are keen in pursuing
Chemistry and is also relevant for Biology students
as well. Prof Ben Pilgrim is a young, dynamic
professor of Chemistry at Corpus Cristi College,
Cambridge University who is able to inspire young
minds to pursue the study of science through his

Thefirstpartoftheworkshopwillinvolvestudents
using innovative techniques to catch jumping
spidersaroundtheInstitution.Thiswillbefollowed
byviewingtheiranatomiesunderamicroscopeand
anesthetic. The first part of the workshop will
involve students using innovative techniques to
catch jumping spiders around the Institution. This
willbefollowedbyviewingtheiranatomiesundera
microscope and anesthetic. Relevant facts on the
ecology of these arachnids will also be shared. The
secondpartoftheworkshopwillbeasharingonthe
rich natural heritage of Singapore and interesting
factsonourlocalnaturescene.

This workshop aim to help students to understand


the essence of music through mathematics, with a
special focus on the construction of musical scale
and music composition. Students will also be
exposed to see how Mathematics has contributed
to the advances in digital music research and
performance.
Prerequisite:somebasicmusicreadingispreferred.
The chemistry of transition metals is a topic in the
H2 Chemistry syllabus. Transition metal complexes
are responsible for the various colours observed in
rocksandgemstones,suchasrubies,turquoiseand
emeralds.Inthishandsonworkshop,youwilllearn
about the chemistry of transition metals the fun

influenza virus and what determines if they can

Did you know you can make glue from milk? What
makesglue,pasteortapesticktothings?Adhesives
areusedtostickthingstogether.Wood,paperand
many other materials have tinycracks and holes in
them. When we glue things together, sometimes
the glue seeps into the tiny openings and hardens,
making the materials stick together. Other times,
themoleculesonthesurfaceofanobjectmixwith
the glue molecules, making the objects stick
together. Try this investigation and the results will
stickwithyouforalongtime.

The objective of the workshop is to introduce


students to the basic principles of cyber security.
Topics which will be covered includes networks,
basic ethical hacking and the different types of
security measures that are used in the industry.

This workshop presents some key tools and
techniques used by malware analysts to examine
malicious code. Students will learn one of the key
techniques used in REM Behavioural Analysis.
Behavioural Analysis focuses on the malwares
interactions with its environment, such as the
registry,thenetwork,andthefilesystem.Basedon
these interactions, students will better understand
howmalwareoperatesandwhatthelikelydamages
and impacts are to the victim. Using virtualisation
software students will learn how malicious code
interacts with its environment.Please note that

Learn about DNA barcoding and get handson


practice on DNA extraction, PCR amplification,
agarose gel electrophoresis, and bioinformatics
analysis. Find out how DNA barcoding is used in
forest research at the Raffles Science Institute in
studies on conservation, invasion biology, gall
ecology, and drought resistance. Student groups
willusetheirnewfoundunderstandingandskillsin
PCR to try to crack a real research problem on the
brink of a solution. Take the challenge and
contribute to real research in RSI. Module will
consist of 3 sessions (8 hours overall).Sessions 1:
Introduction to DNA barcoding and forest research

series we take a handson approach to the art of
food textures and molecular gastronomy. Come

microscope! Youd also be introduced to various
different microscopes (including a fluorescence
microscope and a stereomicroscope) used for
visualisingdifferentthings!
Candies do not escape the principles of materials
science!Modernfoodprocessingcanbedefinedas
a controlled effort to transform and create
microstructures that are palatable. Students will
have the opportunity create their own candies,
appreciate their different solid states and
understand how different processing techniques
canyieldcandieswithverydifferentproperties.
Imagineaworldwherescarcitybecomesathingof
thepast.Nolongerwouldtherebesituationswhere
patients need to wait for years before a suitable
donor is found, 3D bioprinters would print out
compatible organs generated from healthy cells in
the patients body in a much shorter time. 3D
printing technologies promise this and other
exciting possibilities, from tissue engineering,
firearms, sports apparels, construction and
architecture, to printing even chocolates and
candies.
We come into contact with all kinds of materials
every moment of our lives. A group of specially
engineered materials has emerged over the years
following careful research and development work.
Their arrival has revolutionized the way things are
doneandtheyhavecertainlyimpactedourlives.In
this talk, examples will be given to illustrate how
different materials in the recent past and how the
newer engineered materials have greatly improved
theperformanceoftransportationsystems.
