INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE FIELD PLACEMENT
This internship program is one of the major requirements for the student in the faculty of computer
science and information especially bachelors of computer science and information technology) at
Kampala university in Uganda more so a student in his second year of study.
The main intention of internship is to enable the student to put into practice the knowledge acquired at
school and also gets hands on experience in the real life situations.
This internship is so important to a student in higher institution of learning especially Kampala University
in Uganda because it exposes the student to the practical situation of the course being pursued and some
other new things which are not taught in the lecture room.
1.1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERNSHIP EXERCISE
To enable students get hands on experience in the real life situations they are expected to work in
when they graduate
To provide an opportunity for students to apply the principles and techniques theoretically learnt
into real life problem situations.
To enable the intern to prepare and write the internship report that will be forwarded to the
university supervisor at the end of the internship exercise.
To enable student easily get employment in the areas of their specialization as they will have
interacted with prospective employers during the field attachment.
1.2 ORGANIZATION PROFILE
1.2.1 Background of the organization
Buliisa district was created as a district by the act of parliament as a local government service centre and
its mandate is derived from the constitution of Uganda under the local government act(cap 145).it is legal
exercise and mandate took effect in July 2006 by the act of parliament

Buliisa district was one of the counties of the great masindi and was formed on the principle of
decentralization policy of local governance. The current development thinking is that development
program that impact on people are better implemented through decentralization of the functions, powers
and responsibilities to the local level
1.2.2 Location and size
Buliisa district covers an area of 230km2 comprised of open land and water. it is surrounded by lake
Albert, albert Nile, game parks and Budongo forest and the bigger part of the land area of the district is
within the Murchison falls national park, budongo game reserves and Budongo forest

programmes like NAADS, youth livelihood

CHAPTER TWO
INTRODUCTION
This chapter basically indicates how the activities and assignment were done in order to achieve while on
the internship exercise or program with the help of my supervisor. During my internship the following
activities were undertaken.
2.1 NETWORKING
under this activity I looked at configuration register, password recovery, interface configuration and
laboratory assignments were given to configure and verify the topology.
Configuration registers, are categorized into three parts named;
Temporary registers, this is when the router is set to this register however much you save after switching
off the device configuration will be lost.
Permanent register, after saving when a device is switched off the configuration are maintained.
Boot register, here device are set to this register when upgrading the ISO this configuration can be used
to change the registers.
Router>enable
Router#configure terminal
Router # configure-register 0 2102
Router # end
Router # reload
CDP this activity was done on device to discover their neighbors. By default CDP is enabled by all
CISCO devices, CDP sends updates every after 60 seconds and it holds data for 180 seconds.

Host tables are used by network administrators to ping devices using their names instead their internet
protocol address.
Net meeting was another activity is used in communication tools. This a activity is used for the chatting
locally without internet, transfer files, desktop monitoring and simple network graghics below are the
steps of accessing net meeting.
Click on start menu
Open my computer
Double click local disk c
Choose net meeting
Click on configuration.
2.2 COMPUTER ASSEMBLY:
under this activity I looked at installation of all components of the CPU and many others. All this was
installed and uninstalled for the purposes of practicing and mastering them. Below is the data flow chart
that illustrates on how data flow inside the computer.

Hardware and software trouble shooting, under this activity all hardware were examined and
party software, below are the rules of installing hard drive.
you should place the hard drive in a bay and never put two masters and slave on IDE channel.
The hard drive which contains the operating located on the primary IDE channel are configure as
a master.
A gain we looked at installation of windows, and below are the proceeding step of installation:
Insert a CD into a CD room
Wait until you have examined it
Press any key to enter into setup utility
Wait until the wizard examines all files from the CD
Agree the license agreement
Choose the partition disk where the new fresh copy of windows will be installed
Wait until the wizard installs all the files
Continue accepting the process will the wizard install all the files
Enter the administrator username and password under this activity we looked at the different type
2.3 ANOTHER ACTIVITY WAS CABLING
, under this activity I looked at different types of cables namely shielded twisted pair and
unshielded twisted pair. Here the standard that govern how these cables connect device to the
network are T568A and T568B.Thses standards form two types of cables such as cross over and
straight through cables. Where cross over connects different devices, and below are the
arrangements of the standards.

Tools used in the study

RJ45 plug used as the connection of the cables to the network interface card.
Crimping tool used to terminate RJ45 plugs
Cable tester, this is used to test the connectivity the cable both ends.
Cable cutter, this is used to cut cable wire to one straight line
Punching tool is used to fit the cable wires into RJ45 plug.
2.4A NOTHER ACTIVITY WAS I IN PROGRAMMING
so I looked at naming conversion, designing an interface and coding. In designed a project using
a tool like visual studio version 5.0 for building the project interfaces using controls from the
toolbox. Below is the figure2 of an activity that I carried out.

2.5 ASSIGNMENTS
These are the assignment, this assignment was built using packet tracer stimulation, this
assignment saw to enable the communication between different networks, oppsf would work in
autonomous systems and also work in area with area acting as the backbone. Ospf have got
terminologies such as;
DR,BDR,WCM and designated router acts as the spokesman incase BDR fail to operate then DR
will take over. Ospf have factors for the election for DR namely:

Priority (by default priority is set to I when priority is set to 0 or 255 such devices will
not participate in the election)

Note:Routers with higher series should be DR in the case the priority is the same for all routers,
the routers will consinder the router id for the election. Always a router with the elected as the
DR second highest as the BDR.
Router > enable
Router#int s/0

Routas # ip ospf prio 10

Router#end.
Router id when a loopback interface is set the then its ip address will act the router id. Physical
interfaces are not very stable they flap. This a situation when an interface goes up to down, with
logical interface are loopback,Diater interface and ATM are not configured then thr highest ip
address is the device that will act as the id.
Programming is another assignment, under this assignment I looked at designing a calculator that
was built using visual studio version 5.Below is the figure 4 of project interface

CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 CHALLENGES

Time frame work in that I started my internship training was not favoring since I
had just finished my semester exams.
Financial status probably was a big challenge.
Power was a big challenge in the way that power could be off more than two to
three days. This means that no work could be done.
Internet at the local government was not there so this increased expenditure.
There was no group work since my friends could residents at far distance. For
example discussions.

4.2 LIMITATIONS
The limitations that I faced during my internship period were;

Money was one of the biggest limitations that I faced during internship, because i was
buying internet bundle every day and also transport.
The place where I carried out my internship was far from the university hence making it
difficult to the library.

CHAPTER FIVE
5.1 CONCLUSSION
Responses from a cross faculties are in general agreement that internships are beneficial in as
far as they provide interns hand on practical experience and exposure.
The internship programme was beneficial in that it helped boost motivated level of terns and
internships helps to understand theories learnt in class room and enhance learning and
understanding of issues relevant their particular areas of study.
Due to fact that in some organization, interns, were qualified personnel, they were treated
like full time staff and instead of learning they were providing cheap labour in the
organization.
Students generally resent internship find problems in getting organizations where they can
undertake their internship and there has been exacerbated by the fact that internship at
Buliisa local government.
Interns felt that duration of the internship program was short only a semester was ser a side
for the tern during which interns students also had some coursework on the course on offer.
Interns are at the mercy of unscrupulous employers who regard them as staff to be assigned
full responsibilities and duties normally prescribed to fulltime job incumbent.
5.2 RECOMMENDATION
A number of recommendations can be draw from the findings of the study:

The Buliisa district local government should install standby power supply due to the
break down or power failure as well as protecting devices from sudden power.
The university should be actively involved in assisting students in getting organizations
where they can enroll for their internship.
The internship duration should be increased.
The organizations accepting the interns should offer to pay the interns a small token and
funds permit these should be paid for the duration of the stay.
Legislation should be enacted to protect interns against exploitation by unscrupulous
employees.

Supervision of interns should improve with more visits to the sites of internship and those
programs where co coordinators do not visit interns should re-visit regulations and make
sites to their intern.
