In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
I analysed two different openings to a thriller film. I commented on the conventions that they had used. One
used the questions that pulled you in to wanting more from the film. The other showed nothing but
obviously something was happening that wasn’t right. Everything was blurry.

We researched different conventions of a thriller and used them within our blog. We used a “dumb blonde”
as the victim at the start of the film and a brunette at the start of the actual film. These are well known
conventions of a thriller because the blonde is always known to not survive and the brunette is almost every
time saved by somebody. This is the main convention we used. We also used surveillance camera special
effect so we were able to show that somebody is watching her. This creates the story. Using flashbacks at the
start also indicates that she is think about something. Using flashbacks shows the story previously and shows
how and when it happened. We developed these through using the different effect on the program and used
our own opinions on where they were used.

We didn’t keep fully to the conventions of a thriller, we also challenged them to the max! We used music
over the top of our film. Originally we were going to use a voice over to explain that the girl is confused and
not knowing what is going on. But we decided to use music with lyrics. This is not commonly found in thriller
movies, any movies thinking about it. But it explain the feeling of the stalker really well and we thought that
it worked perfectly. We also used the graphics at the start of the film which was simple writing rather than
distorted like the title. We thought it worked well as we wanted the audience to focus on the actual film and
what is happening rather than the credits.

None of these conventions are used in any thrillers I have ever seen. But our group felt that making the film
our own would pull the audience in more.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our opening, we have used a young white blonde to play the main victim in the film, which will not
survive. It represents her as extremely vulnerable, as blondes tend to be quite “dispy” and usually always
make the wrong decisions. She is also young and pretty which shows that she is more likely to be aimed at as
boys are more likely to go for a girl like this. We use this convention as it is very obvious.

The brunette is also involved in the film. Brunettes are shown to be more brassy and alive. She has more
exciting personality and will therefore take matters into her own hands and is more likely to take a bigger
step. As she is more alive she is more brave and will have a better instinct and know how to survive and what
to do. This is how she is represented. They are also pretty and are more obvious to boys so they are more
likely to become a well known victim in the film.

Young women in general are shown as vulnerable which is how we have shown them to be. Using different
conventions and they way they are resented to the audience lets it all off.

The stalker and murder isn't actually shown in opening but is involved. It is still clear that he is not right in
the head. As he is the male character he automatically becomes the one in control. Men in general have
dominance over the women.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
As our film is low budgeted, and we would be more likely that an independent company such as Metradome
will distribute our film. Metradome specialise in distributing low budget films.

A film that is very similar to ours is Firewall which was distributed by Warner Brothers. Unlike Metrodome,
Warner Brothers distributes higher budget films. They were able to use big settings and better equipment to
film and edit, therefore, the film in total was a lot more widely distributed around the world in festivals and
premiers. As our film is low budget and would not be taken on by any big companies we would distribute it
via, Facebook, Myspace and Youtube. These ill still be shown around the world but not be advertised
anywhere special.

If we had access to better equipment and more money we would be able to make the film a lot more
interactive and more detailed. As we don’t however, we have to stick with the basics.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our media products target audience is aimed at our age (16 and 17) women and men until the ages of
around 24, 24.

We specifically chose these ages as these are the ages where they are more likely to want to watch a scary
film on an evening. They are more interested in thriller type films and are more into adrenaline rushes. They
are more likely to help the distribution of our film as well as they will forward links and chat about something
like a film.
How did you attract/ address your audience?

As our film is a low budget film we are not likely to be distributed anywhere huge. Therefore we uploaded
the film to youtube. This straight away attracted people to the film and they were able to pass on other
information to there friends etc. Within the first ten minutes of our uploading to youtube, there was a
comment from somebody to ask when the full film will be released. We also wrote about our film on twitter
and got people involved. This was a great idea as people commented and took notice in what we were doing
and got really involved.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing
this product?
We have found that the different technologies that were needed in producing a film is not as easy as it looks.
The program “Adobe Premier Pro” we used for editing is a good program to use and once you are used to it,
it was more easy.

Using the camera was easy to use and because I personally filmed all of the footage I got to grips with
rotating and using it and got used to all of the icons quickly. I appreciate now how useful and simple the
cameras are to use now.

We used Mixcraft, which is sound editing software it to make the soundtrack . The music to loop was not as
simple as it looked and it took a lot of effort to get it right. We still feel that the music is still obviously looped
but when school friends have watched have not noticed.

All together I found the software harder to use than I thought. Compared the preliminary task it was
extremely hard and it was a struggle. We did not realise at the start how much effort would have to go into it
to make it perfect.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to the full product ?
In comparison to the real final product, our preliminary task was a bit of a joke. We have learnt a lot since we
have started the project. From how to film to how to edit. In our preliminary task only used one angle on the
camera, there was no camera movement included in there. Although, now, our final product has a lot of
different camera angles and different movements. We have learnt working together gets us a lot further than
trying to do it all alone. We are able to use our different opinions and work towards something that we are
able to achieve and are very happy with.

Using the different software at the beginning was a pain as we ere not used to how it worked. Whereas now
we are finally done and completed and it is such a relief.

We have include sound effect, video transition, video effect, audio effect, time delays, more characters and
linked a soundtrack and all in all is a lot bigger success than our preliminary.

I feel that our final product is successful as we have put so much work and effort into doing it. We were in te
room every minute we had. The computer messed up a few times and we lost are work, which was stressful I
will admit. But we took it on and started again.
