TITLE OF LESSON Reading Day 1 Authors Purpose
CONTEXT OF LESSON
Preassessment: The students were given preassessment at the beginning of the
school to determine what reading groups they were to be placed in. This particular
lesson does not require a preassessment. However, I will be informally preassessing the students at the beginning of the lesson by asking several questions.
Appropriateness: This lesson is appropriate because this skill is a required 3 rd
grade SOL and the next story we will be reading involves authors purpose.

PROCEDURE
- I will introduce the lesson by telling the students that we will be talking about
authors purpose. We will have a brief discussion about what authors purpose
means and different reasons why authors write books, stories, etc.
- Then I will pull up the SB lesson Authors Purpose. We will go through the lesson
slide by slide. ~10 Minutes
- Slide 1: Why do authors write?
- Slide 2: introduce acronym P. I. E.
- Slide 3: Identify each letter of PIE
- Slide 4: Persuade discuss definition and questions they may have
- Slide 5: Inform discuss definition and questions they may have
- Slide 6: Entertain discuss definition and questions they may have
- Slide 7: Example sort for each term (3 examples for each)
- We will review each term and then start the PowerPoint with examples of each
purpose. ~10 Minutes
- Slide to a Slice Game: Once we have finished the PowerPoint, I will pair the
students up (with one group of 3) and have them play Slide to a Slice Authors
Purpose practice. The students take turns picking cards with a small passage on it.
They have to determine which purpose the passage is and the first person to get to
the finish line, wins (only if all of their passages are correctly identified). ~20
Minutes
- After we wrap up the game, I will bring the students back to their desks and review
what we learned today. I will ask them the 3 purposes authors have and 1 or 2
examples of each. If I cant do this has a whole group, I will ask each student one
question as they are leaving the class.
- I will stop the game around 9:35 so that we have enough time to explain and copy
down homework. With any extra time, I will let them get a head start on their
homework.

I will walk around to the pairs playing the game and provide help if they are
having trouble deciding between the 3 purposes.
If the students need help while playing the game, I will put a poster explaining
each under the document camera while they are playing so they have something
to refer to if they get stuck.
I will present multiple examples of the topic at hand for further understanding.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT?

I may not have enough time with the SB and/or PowerPoint portions of my lesson
to allow more time for the game. If this happens, I will just go over examples
quickly and do the sort in my SB lesson for them and briefly discuss each
example. This is important information and I dont want to skip anything, but
since this is the high reading group, I should be able to get through it a little
quicker.
The students could get out of hand or noisy playing the game. If this happens, I
will write a word on the board and every time I have to remind them to settle
down, I will erase a letter of that word. If I erase all the letters, its 1 minute off
recess.
Fire/Intruder drill If this happens, we will stop what we are doing immediately
and follow the procedure for that particular drill. When we come back into the
classroom, we will resume instruction and the students will continue working on
their word map.
