Lesson Plan
Education Standards
Content Area: Mathematics Standard: 4. Shape, Dimension, and
Geometric Relationships
ii. Partition shapes into parts with equal areas.
Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole.4
(CCSS: 3.G.2)
Materials Needed
Math Curse-Jon Scieszka & Lane Smith
Notebook paper
sharpened pencil
Engage
Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson
1. Pull out manipulative shapes, rhombus, trapezoid, etc.
2. Make an example, If a rhombus is equal to 1 what is each
triangle worth? (This requires student participation.)
3. Introduce book. Now that we understand fractions can add up to
equal a whole, I want to introduce you to a book that deals with the
math weve been learning! Math Curse, by Jon Scieszka. After we read
it, I will assign each table a problem from the book and work to solve
them using our manipulatives!
4. Begin reading book.
5. Once you are done reading the book, hand out a sheet of
notebook paper to each child.
6. Assign each child a problem from the book, because we are using
manipulatives to represent fractions, we are going to be assigning each
table problems from page 6 and page 7. (each page has more than one
problem. Some also need additional support to make them harder,)
Assessment
To assess, I will give the kids an exit ticket. They will be forming their own
problems using the methods we learned about. i.e, if one trapezoid is equal
to 1, what is a rhombus equal to?
Create your own fraction using the manipulatives and write it on a separate
piece of paper. Make sure to check your problem to see if it works!
Once you are finished, raise your hand and I will come collect your exit
ticket and you may go back to your classrooms. Thank you!
