Is Going to College Out of State Worth It?
Barrow, Lisa. Does College Still Pay? The Economists Voice 2.4 (200): 1-8. Print. This Article
is asking whether or not the price of college is still worth the price. It relates to the cost of
higher education. I will Use it to provide evidence that college is in fact still worth the
price.
Branstetter, Ben. "Where Does That Tuition Money Go? It's Time for Colleges to Answer."
theweek.com. N.p., 24 May 2015. Web. 1 Mar. 2016.
<http://theweek.com/articles/549431/where-does-yourtuition-money-time-collegesanswer>. This article starts out very straight forward by saying there's nothing in
American Life that has increased more than that of the costs of higher education. The
article has some good information with figures that really help illustrate how much the
costs have increased over time. The author also gives good input on where colleges are
spending the money. The author thinks that it would be helpful to society and how people
decide on their futures with higher education.

Brewer, Dominic J., Eric R. Eide, and Ronald G. Ehrenberg. Does It Pay to Attend an Elite
Private College? University of Wisconsin Press 34.1 (1999): 104-23. Print. This article
compiles previous research done and gives statistics on whether or not elite colleges are
worth it. This relates to my topic because it is talking about whether or not a college is

worth paying for. I will use this to not only compare tuition for in-state and out-of-state
students in public universities but elite colleges as well.

Curs, Bradley, and Larry Singell. Analysis of the Application and Enrollment Processes for Instate and Out-of-state Students at a Large Public University. Economics of Education
Review 21 (2002): 111-24. Print. This article models the application and enrollment
decisions for in-state and out-of-state students. This connects to my topic because it talks
about the statistics of where students choose to go out of college. I will use this paper to
give examples and hard evidence that students often choose to go to in-state colleges.

Dale, Stacy Berg, and Alan B. Krueger. Estimating the Payoff to Atending a More Selective
College: An Application of Selection of Observables and Unobservables. National
Bureau of Economic Research (1999): 1-33. Web. <http://www.nber.org/papers/w7322>.
This article is on college worth. It connects to the price of college and if it is worth going.
I will use this to talk about the quality of education and whether or not the price is going
to pay off.
Desrochers, Donna M., Colleen M. Lenihan, and Jane V. Wellman. "Trends in College Spending:
1998-2008." deltacostproject.org. N.p., 2010. Web. 1 Mar. 2016.
<http://www.deltacostproject.org/sites/default/files/products/Trends-in-CollegeSpending-98-08.pdf>. This article is long but it does answer three pretty good
questions...Where does the money come from? Where does the money go? What does the
money buy? All these questions are good and many people do want to know the answers

to these questions in more detail. The contents has a lot so you can pretty much decide
what you think would be the most useful and start from there in this article.
Ferguson, Danielle. "Student Tuition and Fee Distribution: Where Does Your Money Go?"
iowastatedaily.com. N.p., 12 Nov. 2013. Web. 28 Feb. 2015.
<http://www.iowastatedaily.com/news/article_ec753408-2fd4-11e3-ab1b0019bb2963f4.html>. This article seems like a good one because it's actually from a
university. The author gives good input on where your tuition money and fee payments
get distributed to. I think the picture at the top of the article could be useful because its
nice to have a visual thing to look at and show where the money goes to.
Groen, Jeffrey A., and Michelle J. White. In-state versus Out-of-state Students: The Divergence
of Interest between Public Universities and State Governmnets. Journal of Public
Economics 88 (2004): 1793-814. Print. This article is about the divergence of interest
between universities and state governments concerning stadards for admitting in-state
versus out-of-state students. This relates to the topic because it is discussing tuition costs.
I will use this to compare in state to out of state tuition costs.
Gurin, Patricia, Biren Nagda, and Gretchen Lopez. "The Benefits of Diversity in Education for
Democratic Citizenship." Journal of Social Issues 60.1 (2004): 17-34. Print. Patricia

by diversity, and the defense of affirmative action in higher education.
Hacker, Andrew, and Claudia Dreifus. "Where's All That College Tuition Money Going?"
usatoday.com. N.p., 17 Aug. 2010. Web. 28 Feb. 2015.
<http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/opinion/forum/2010-08-18column18_ST1_N.htm>. The authors give great input on where college tuition money

actually goes once its paid. They list a ton of different things that give the reader a solid
idea and knowledge of what the tuition money goes to. These authors are credible as well
because I read an article by these same two authors about higher education and whether
or not the price of admissions was worth it.
Heller, Donald E. "The Effects of Tuition and State Financial Aid on Public College Enrollment."
The Review of Higher Education 23.1 (1995): 65-89. Print. Donald E. Heller analyzes the
cost of higher education and correlation to students not wanting to partake in a higher
education due to the costs. He also points out that the amount of financial support given
from the institution determines the tuition paid by students.
Hoxby, Caroline M. How the Changing Market Structure of U.S. Higher Education Explains
College Tuition. National Bureau of Economic Research (1997): 1-77. Print. This paper
gives evidence demonstrating the ways in which the changing market structure affects
college prices and college quality. This connects to my question because it talks about
prices and educational quality. I will use this to give older evidence towards tuition cost
and the quality of education.
Jasty, Kunal. "Where Does All That Money Go?" radioopensource.org. N.p., 17 May 2014. Web.
1 Mar. 2015. <http://radioopensource.org/college-budgets/>. This seems like a great
source to use for answering the question on what universities do with all that tuition
money they make from each semester. The pie charts are awesome and the written
statements and comparisons between public and private institutions are very useful as
well. I think you could definitely take a lot from this source and implement it in a
research paper.

Kuh, George D. "The Other Curriculum: Out-of-Class Experiences Associated with Student
Learning and Personal Development." The Journal of Higher Education 66.2 (1995):
123-55. Print. George D. Kuh uses the phrase out of class in The Journal Of Higher
Education as a framework to analyze students and what attributes to their development,
and the differing outcomes amongst different institutions.

Money 101 discusses the question regarding whether or not to stay in state or leave out
of state. This excerpt describes the pros and cons of out of state and in state. This article
describes the tuition differences as well.
Schneider, Mark. "Where Does All That Tuition Go?" aei.org. N.p., Dec. 2009. Web. 28 Feb.
2015. <http://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/09-EduO-Dec-g.pdf>. This

article talks about how the cost of going to college has increased and is only increasing
more. It gives some good insight on where the tuition money goes to. This relates to the
other sources because it gives good input on where a lot of tuition money is going to and
explains in good detail where the money should go to more. Id use this article a lot
because the author seems pretty credible and has good input on the subject.
