ANZAC
Day
By D. Hunter
(A veteran of Shaggy Ridge with the 2/12 Battalion in WWII)
I saw a kid marchin with medals on his chest.

He marched alongside Diggers marching six abreast.

He knew that it was ANZAC Day - he walked along with pride.

He did his best to keep in step with the Diggers by his side.
And when the march was over the kid was rather tired.

A Digger said Whose medals, son? to which the kid replied:

They belong to daddy, but he did not come back.

He died up in New Guinea on a lonely jungle track.

The kid looked rather sad then and a tear came to his eye.

The Digger said Dont cry my son and I will tell you why.
Your daddy marched with us today - all the blooming way.

We Diggers know that he was there - its like that on ANZAC Day.
The kid looked rather puzzled and didnt understand,

But the Digger went on talking and started to wave his hand.
For this great land we live in, theres a price we have to pay

For we all love fun and merriment in this country where we live.
The price was that some soldier his precious life must give.
For you to go to school my lad and worship God at will,

Someone had to pay the price so the Diggers paid the bill.

Your daddy died for us my son - for all things good and true.
I wonder if you understand the things Ive said to you.
The kid looked up at the Digger - just for a little while

And with a changed expression, said, with a lovely smile:

I know my dad marched here today - this is ANZAC Day.
I know he did. I know he did, all the bloomin way.

The talented tenor will join
the Moorabool Light Orchestra in Bacchus Marsh on Sunday May 1, alongside local
clarinet quartet Claritude.
Jacob said it would be his
first time playing with the
Orchestra and he was looking forward to it very much.
I think [MLO Music Director] Barry Wilkins had heard
a bit about my work and got
in touch, he thought I might
be the right kind of person
to mix and match different stuff for his orchestra, I
would like to think he was
right, he said.

We will be rehearsing on
the Friday night before the
concert, but that will be the
first time I have sung with
the Orchestra. I am very
excited.

Developers around Ballan

are in for hefty water infrastructure costs.
Melbourne Water, responsible for issues including
regional urban storm-water
drainage in Moorabool, proposed a series of drainage
overlays that were adopted
by council at the April
meeting.
A report tabled at the meeting stated that without
the Development Services
Schemes (DSS), and the
Drainage Strategy (DS), developers would continue to
create a series of small localised storm water management systems which would
eventually become the responsibility of council.
The schemes are designed
to enable the planning and
co-ordination of drainage
infrastructure for future development, including flood
impact caused by urban runoff and environment protection through water quality
measures.
The North West DSS will
see developers pay a preliminary contribution per
hectare of $66,031; the South
West DSS rate is $113,843;

and the Gillespies Lane DSS

rate is $113,842.
The Gosling Street Drain
DS was officially received by
council at the meeting.
The advantage of a DSS is
that Melbourne Water with
its significant resources and
expertise in flood mitigation
and storm-water management, would be involved in
the design and construction
process and that some assets created will become its
maintenance responsibility,
the report stated.
Works identified in the
Gosling Street Drain Upper
area catchment will assist in
alleviating flooding downstream. Given the catchment
area is less than 60 hectares,
MW propose the strategy
be used as a guide and implemented by Council as
resources permit.
The report did however also
note the restrictions that
existing developments have
placed on enforcing a DS.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey said the
scheme ensures future infrastructure needs, protects the
environment, and ensures
that the water infrastructure
in the ground can cope with
the capacity that will come

its way.
Its an initiative that Melbourne Water do right across
their catchment, and theyve
been consulting with the
community now for seven
years in relation to this
proposal.
Cr Toohey pointed out that
it would not apply to all
residents.
People dont pay this until such time as they do a
new development, and for
some residents who just live
on a little block with their
homes, if they never develop
anything they never pay
anything.
Cr Toohey amended the
motion to support the DSS
and DS, to include a condition that Melbourne Water
write to all landowners
listed in the development
service scheme, before the
end of April to give forward
notice of consultation and
discussion with the community in the future on the
proposal because some
new landowners may have
moved in after 2014 (when
two previous community
consultations occurred) and
not be aware of the issue.

The primary school girls before they cut their hair that would be made into wigs. Photos Lisa Comerford

A cut above
the rest

By Lisa Comerford
Long hair became short
when primary school students cut their locks.
Five Bacchus Marsh Primary School girls donated their
hair to Wigs for Kids.
The Grade Four and Six
students, Charlotte, Matilda,
Eleanor, Lauren and Mia cut
close to 30cm off their hair to
donate to the Alopecia Foundation. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease in which

hair is lost from some or all

parts of the body.
When Charlotte saw her
Mum Donna shave her hair
for The Worlds Greatest
Shave, she decided that she
wanted to do something for
charity too. So Donna suggested donating her hair to
the Alopecia Foundation
who makes wigs for kids
suffering from the disease.
Along with Charlottes sister Matilda and three of their
friends, they all decided they

too would donate their hair.

We are true legends, giggled Charlotte.
School Principal Melinda
Williams said she was so
proud of the girls, who had
their hair cut in front of the
whole school at an assembly.
Lauren said her hair was
getting too long and it was
being a pain.
Eleanor raised $68 for her
efforts with Mia raising a
whopping $700.75c.

It takes ten people to cut

30cm each off their hair to
make one wig. Isnt that
amazing?
The Alopecia Foundations
mission is to help raise
funds to find a cure, provide
support to those who suffer from Alopecia and their
families and to raise awareness of Alopecia Areata. For
more information or donate

Dear Editor,
I would like to draw the communitys attention to a most
disturbing and unexpected decision by the DWELP to
discharge the committee of the Ballan Mechanics Institute
and instead to hand control of the Mechanics Hall to the
Ballan Community House.
After the upgrade to the hall by the Moorabool Shire
some 12 years ago, a committee took over and was shortly
afterwards discharged. An advertisement by then DSE, now
DWELP, brought a new committee of local residents to take
over management.
This committee took over a hall in poor shape. Not all work
was completed by the Shire and the new committee found
itself with a number of accounts which could not be paid.
The committee has worked very hard over the years to bring
the hall up to an acceptable condition as finances improved.
The floor was redone, electrical power points put in, new
heating/air conditioning, the front rooms were re-stumped
and much more in the way of repairs and maintenance.
The committee has worked very hard in its own time with
members cleaning up rubbish, mowing and doing minor
repairs; all of this without assistance or help from either the
DWELP or the Ballan Community House members, who
have not been at all supportive over the years.
The hall committee has brought in new tenants such as the
Moorabool Library and runs the Centrelink office, which
has been of great assistance to many in the community. The
committee has now applied for grants to improve the car
park at the rear of the building.
I would like to hear an explanation of why such a
hardworking and efficient committee and its staff should be
discharged without any good reason. The DWELP refused
to allow an advertisement for new committee members and
has certainly not advertised for expressions of interest for the
committee.

Aged and Disability Services

Supporting our Community - Moorabool Shire Councils Aged and Disability Services
Older residents facing a lack of suitable affordable housing stock in Moorabool
Home at Last is a State Government funded program targeted at early intervention
and pre-crisis response to older people experiencing housing instability, particularly
those living in insecure and unaffordable private rental homes.
Older people have a right to a decent home in their retirement years but
increasing numbers of older people are struggling to survive, says Jeff Feidler,
Manager of the Housing for the Aged Action Group.
General issues for this at risk group include, market forces, illness or age
related disability, low income / pensioner status, low levels of life-savings like
superannuation, loss of a loved one or family breakdown forcing a person to
cope with rent on one income.
Rates of home ownership across the nation are declining and Australia has an
ageing population. Older women (in particular) are more likely to experience
homelessness and their rates of homelessness are growing.
A lack of investment in public housing by successive governments over
decades has meant that many are forced to rent in the unregulated private
market. Added to this is the difculty for residents of Moorabool Shire to access
appropriate sized housing.
We need smaller units (with appropriate accessibility) to enable people to age
in place, advises Mr Feidler.
The 2011 Australian Bureaus of Statistics data shows that there were more than
300 people aged 60 or older in Moorabool Shire renting in unsecure private rental
accommodation. This represents an 86% increase over the ve year period from 2006.
In the last nancial year 27 people (aged 55-65) and 21 people (aged 66-85)
contacted our local Homelessness Access Point for assistance, says Toni Gillett,
Housing Services Coordinator at Child & Family Services Ballarat.
In short 48 older people required assistance with crisis accommodation, support,
tenancy issues and information around housing options.
In order to address some of these issues, an alliance of key agencies has formed.
The alliance consists of Home at Last program, Moorabool Shire Council, Aged
Care Assessment Services, Djerriwarrh Health Services, Council of the Ageing,
Wintringham, Child and Family Services (CAFS), Department of Health and
Human Services and Grampians Homelessness Network.

It was an evening of forward motions at the

April council meeting.
Held on Wednesday 6 April at the Lerderderg
Library, the meeting saw a number of draft
policies put out for public comment, mostly
relating to the shires recreation and sporting
facilities.
The Draft Recreation Reserve User Fees and
Charges Policy was adopted, along with the
Draft Recreation Reserve Leases and Licences
Occupancy Policy, the Draft Recreation
Reserve Capital Works Contributions Policy,
the Draft Community Facilities Funding
Policy, and the Draft Recreation Reserve
Management Framework.
Residents were given eight weeks to view
the documents and provide feedback, up
from the originally recommended four-week
period due to the number of documents.
Two strategies were also adopted at the
meeting, having previously gone through
the feedback process the Moorabool Shire
Retail Strategy 2041, and the Moorabool
Heritage Strategy.

The first train tracks on the new crossing loop at

Rowsley have been laid.
The kilometre-long loop will provide another
point for trains to pass each other, which is
expected to help services recover from unexpected
delays more quickly, boosting reliability and
punctuality.
However, the line has been plagued by chronic
train delays and severe overcrowding since June
last year, with the announcement of the tracks and
sleepers being laid also coming with an apology
from Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan.
Its been a tough few months for Ballarat line
passengers, Ms Allan said.
We recognise that, apologise for that, and are
hard at work restoring services and investing in
the infrastructure we need for better services in
the future.
The project will also upgrade the rail crossing
at Rowsley Station Road - boom gates will be
installed, which will bolster the existing flashing
lights, making it safer for motorists, passengers
and the local community.
The project is being delivered by V/Line and is on
track for completion by mid-2016.

area to advise them of the works. There are no planned interruptions to water supply and
disruptions to residents will be kept to a minimum, but anyone in this area during this time is
advised to be aware work is occurring.

Councillors will be reined in as of September 20 this year, as council gears up for October
elections.
The caretaker period will mean that councillors will not be able to make significant policy
decisions, and will have restrictions placed on access to council resources, in the period
leading up to the council elections to be held on 22 October.
The elections Caretaker period Policy was adopted by council and explains how council
will continue to conduct its business while in pre-election mode.
CEO Rob Croxford said during the election period, certain prohibitions apply to the
general functions and powers of Council.
This policy is created to ensure council business can run as normal but to ensure that
at the same time, the election process is conducted in a manner that is ethical, fair and
equitable, Mr Croxford said.
The policy is also designed to ensure that public resources, including staff resources, are
not used in election campaigning or in a way that may improperly influence the result of
the election - or improperly advantage existing Councillors as candidates in the election.
A full copy of the policy can be downloaded at www.moorabool.vic.gov.au.

on their elections if only the
government will make some
reasonable allowances, Mr
Ramsay said.
He pointed out that the
Colac-Otways Shire Council
has proposed using a council-owned venue instead of
renting an election office for
several months which will
save that council $32,000.
The VEC has not yet confirmed it will agree to this
but it is more than reasonable to make an exception if
it can save our constituents
hard earned rates from going to waste.

The agreement Council
signed with the Victorian
Electoral Commission is for
$164,060, excluding GST,
with the amount including the costs associated
with compulsory voting
enforcement.
The amount also includes
rental for the VEC office but
Member for Western Victoria
Simon Ramsay says that the
State Government should
change the rules to allow the

VEC to use council-owned

facilities, saving that cost.
A Moorabool Shire council
spokesperson said as Council doesnt have a space to
offer the VEC to meet their
specifications and requirements for this election,
Council is required to cover
the rental of the VEC Electoral Office. The VEC are yet
to advise of a suitable office.
However,
Mr
Ramsay
said the State Government
should allow VEC staff to
use council-owned venues,
saving five months of rental
costs.

Perspective

with Paul Tatchell

Investing in the Noggin; now thats using your Noodle

TOM

I grew up in an era of slide

rules and logarithm books;
whilst some would suggest
I should be old enough to
know better, I say I am simply old enough to know less!
We didnt have calculators
in school, and even if they
did early fiscal turbulence
would have prevented the
luxury of such a magnificent
piece of early technology.
The only method for calculation was called using your
noggin, and some noggins worked better than
others.
For those readers that have
less grey hair than I appear
to be sporting, a noggin is
your head, or more importantly the gears within. I
always promised myself that
when I got older I would
never us the phrase back
in my day or when I was a
boy; so I wont.
So, back before my joints
ached like a marathon runner, and music was magically produced from a turntable
and vinyl, the noggin was
the Google for exploring and
storing our limited worldly
knowledge. Of course as we
get older the soft drive of
the noggin loses its storage capacity and the files

become harder to find. In

todays language I think we
run out of disc space and the
hard drive starts to slow.
My first introduction to the
world of hand held technology was when I saved two
weeks army pay to buy a scientific calculator at engineering school. I really wanted a
Pontiac Parisienne, but on
$23 bucks a week including
bonuses, I would have struggled to buy a Pontiac Potato
so the scientific calculator
seemed a reasonable investment at the time.
I have to say that noggins
without an induction into
electronic technology in this
case scientific calculators,
are strange bedfellows; especially when ones noggin is
not used to going on a journey of discovery without
actually knowing how I got
there.
Putting ones trust into a
hand held device made me
about as comfortable as an
emu taking flying lessons,
but after a series of tests between noggin and machine,
hoping to prove it wrong, I
came to the conclusion that
noggins were being superseded by the marvels of
technology.

My gravest concern was if

man made the machine that
is smarter than the man,
what if the machine built a
machine? Not only would I
become obsolete the people
that owned the machines
would only need the people
that built them, until the machines worked out how to
build themselves.
Using the theory that all
noggins are not developed
equal, it stands to reason
that the unskilled noggin
has less chance of survival
in the world of employment
than the skilled; and unless
we continue to upgrade the
skill levels of future noggins, we are heading into
the modern replacement for
the Industrial revolution. I
would suggest that we are
already there.
As exciting as all of this
technology is, unless we
stay ahead of the curve we
are smarting our way into
the unemployment line. History is a great teacher and
the phases of the Industrial
Revolution including cause
and effect need to provide a
blue-print to ensure we dont
out-smart ourselves.
Governments are obsessed
with the politics of funding

fees would be replaced by

a commitment to join the
company after graduation
for a specified period to
reimburse the costs, in the
same way the defence force
asks for a commitment from
their officers after graduating from Defence Force paid
University training.
Government
investment
into industry based higher
education would create
synergies between higher
education and highly skilled
workforces; the current
system is reliant on funding with no guarantee of
employment.
It takes a bi-lateral approach
to integrate education and
the workforce. Companies
pay serious money for technology when we should be
developing our own. Being
ahead of the game means
writing our own rules, not
buying someone elses.
Just like the metaphor for
Charlie Chaplins socio-economic message in the silent
classic Modern Times, our
unskilled workforce is facing a sleeping giant in the
form of technology based
unemployment, where machines replace manpower.
Automation within manu-

of Gonski, when in reality

they need to put their collective noggins together and realise that Gonski is already
out of date, and we havent
even paid for the manual.
Future proofing a countries
economy means investing
in the future. Investing in
education and up-skilling
before the present skills become obsolete will avoid a
technological depression. Its
not about buying jobs for the
present; its about ensuring
there are jobs to go to in the
future.
There is no greater investment than education, but it
doesnt need to be confined
to the traditional school
system. Industries that are
reliant on new technologies
could provide part of the solution by creating their own
training grounds for future
technocrats.
There is no reason why industry cant build schools
for higher education; they
just need the incentive. Using Silicon Valley modelling, industry could build
schools that are core specific,
training young people to
dovetail into their future
development.
Higher education HECS

facturing and warehousing

will continue to put pressure
on the unskilled and the
semi-skilled. The challenge
is to build a foundation of
education that keeps pace
with technology; buying
intellectual property will
never have the sustainability
of building our own.
Young minds are crying
out to be stimulated by the
Technological Revolution.
The politics of investment
should be bi-partisan without debate. We buy technology from countries smart
enough to invest in their
youth; you may not be able
to put an old noggin on
young shoulders, but you
can certainly develop a
smart one.

Instead of finding new ways

to tax, lets look at new ways
to invest, and the tax will
always be there. Economic
development needs an emphasis on the development,
the economics will look after
themselves.
I dont use a scientific calculator anymore, I just Google
it. If only I could remember
why I asked the question.

with Tom Kingston

You cant see the forest because its not there

A few weeks back I was

escorted by the police out of
the coupe at Lapoinya. They
took my name and details
and told me that if I returned
to the coupe within the next
90 days I would face a fine
and possibly a jail sentence.
These are the new laws of
the Tasmanian government
as it targets those who stand
in the way of, or protest
against, Forestry Tasmania.
It was at this Lapoinya coupe
that Bob Brown was also arrested and has had his day in
court and he awaits another
court appearance when he
challenges these new stringent laws. I am not sure of
the numbers who have taken
action in this coupe but it is
significant.
I returned to the coupe at
Lapoinya yesterday to be

part of a meeting between

Forestry Tasmania and the
Lapoinya locals. I was well
within the 90 day time frame
but the clear-felling of the
coupe has finished and most
of the big machinery had
gone onto the next coupe.
All the trees young and old,
big and small, all the undergrowth, all the beautiful
ferns and all the animals and
birds were now gone. It was
a barren place and all that
remained were huge piles
of wood that are of no use
to Forestry Tasmania and
are waiting to be burned. As
one of the neighbours stated
at the meeting there was
enough wood cut into easily
carted pieces in the coupe to
supply a firewood merchant
a years supply? The man
from FT replied that as the

piled needed to be burnt

ASAP there would not be a
chance for this wood to be
collected for local firewood.
The locals lose out yet again.

Forestry Tasmania, as part

of its requirements, has to
meet with the locals and
talk about the final steps in
the clear-felling of coupes.
I could not find one local
who wanted this coupe
clear-felled. So this meeting
yesterday was between two
employees of Forestry Tasmania and the locals. I went
as one of the locals and was
joined by about ten or so others all from either properties
bordering the coupe of from
nearby towns.
One of the two employees of
FT arrived on time at 2.00pm

and the other arrived at least

an hour later. Stewart Hoyt
who, with his wife Barbara,
has been leading this fight
for Lapoinya took notes at
the meeting which included
the following, The community accepts that it is better to
burn slash which has some degree of greenness so as to allow some material to decompose
rather than fully incinerate.
The community does NOT accept that high intensity burning
is a necessity in this Coupe. The
community insists that a low
to moderate intensity burn will
better facilitate soil seed banks,
as well as humus and relevant
soil biota retention allowing a
mixed native forest to naturally emerge.
During the course of the
conversation, as things

seemed to be going not so

well for FT, their representative made the following
comment. Some people
believe that workers for Forestry Tasmania are all rednecks and the like who are
happy to trash the forest or words to that effect. These
were the words of someone
who had just organised the
destruction of a local forest. We were in no mood for
this. It would not have mattered had the workers all
voted for the Greens. These
workers destroyed this local
well-loved forest. They, led
by this man who was lecturing us locals about rednecks,
had simply and quickly,
with their machines and expertise destroyed what was
a local sanctuary for thousands of forms life. And this

employee wanted to assure

us that they were all decent
men. I am sure they were but
that did not stop them and
him from destroying the forest. And is not that the way
things are in our society?
And after they have destroyed our forest we seek
some crumbs from their
table. In this case we asked
for a low intensity burn
instead of a high intensity
burn. The employee from
Forestry Tasmania said he
would consult, and we were
to be grateful. He had just
destroyed our forest.
What is your opinion?

Regional market remains stable

In the first three months of the year, regional
Victorias property market remained relatively
stable with a median house price of $347,500.

Despite a moderate start to 2016, the latest REIV

quarterly data shows multiple regional towns
recorded significant price increases in the three
months to March 31.

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV

The Ballarat suburb of Soldiers Hill was the

best performing in the March quarter with
house prices increasing 14.8 per cent to a median
of $373,000. This was up from $325,000 in the
December quarter.

Solid price growth was also recorded in the

Geelong suburb of Herne Hill where house prices
rose 8.7 per cent to a median of $388,000, up from
$357,000 in the previous quarter.

Similar growth was also experienced in the

central Gippsland town of Churchill and the
commuter town of Bacchus Marsh.
House prices in Churchill rose 8.6 per cent over
the quarter to a median of $195,000, up from
$179,500 in December an increase of more than
$15,000.

Meanwhile, Bacchus Marchs median house

price increased 8.4 per cent to $400,000, up from
$369,000 in December.
Other towns experiencing capital growth in the
first three months of the year included Inverloch,
up eight per cent to a median of $475,000;
Daylesford, up 7.8 per cent to $485,000; Hamilton,
up 7.2 per cent to $275,000; Ballarat North, up 7.1
per cent to a median of $342,750; Swan Hill, also

up 7.1 per cent to $300,000; and Shepparton, up

seven per cent to $267,500.

While a high number of public holidays saw less

stock on market in the first three months of the

year, Mildura had the states highest turnover

with 354 homes sold in the year to March 31.

This was followed by Traralgon and Ocean Grove,

with 265 and 228 sales respectively.

High sales volumes were also recorded in

Highton (190 sales), Ballarat Central (169 sales),

Morwell (160 sales), Drouin (156 sales) and Sale

(155 sales).

The Bungaree Bowling Club

has celebrated premiership
success just two years after
joining the local league.
The team of 16 took out the
Pennant Premiership in Division 7 of the Ballarat and
District Bowls Division.
Held in Smeaton, the premiership event saw Bungaree take the win over Daylesford by 27 shots.
Treasurer Jason Frawley
said it was very rewarding
to see the club get up just two
years after being formed.
Myself, Tony Trigg, John
Maher and John Wade were
the main ones who started
the club from scratch just
two years ago and it was really great to see one of the
teams have success so early
on, he said.
Some of the players had
only picked up a bowl for
the first time when the club
started. Over the past two
years we have mentored
new bowlers and taught
them how to play, so to win
a premiership in our second
season is pretty rewarding.
Whilst the club had been
playing and training with
the Ballarat Bowls Club, Mr
Frawley said he looked forward to the construction of
their own local green.

Back L-R: Noel Kennedy, Tricia Watt, Tony Trigg, John Wade, Chris Hanrahan, Daryl
Blomeley, Chris Ward, Peter Spratling, Chris Thornton, Mick Frawley, Michael Phyland.
Front L-R: Dale Tonkin, Josh Peach, Jayson Frawley, John Maher, Andrew Mahar, Travis
Murnane, David Thornton. Photo submitted
A couple of months ago
we started the construction
of our own synthetic green
at the Bungaree Recreation
Reserve, which should be
completed in the next couple
of months. We hope this will
bring in new players and
also help us financially, he
said.
Whilst playing in Ballarat,
it was hard to generate income because we were having to pay green fees to the
Ballarat Bowls Club. Now
we will be able to generate
our own income with our
own bar and home ground
tournaments.

This will also be a real

community meeting point
over summer. Bungaree has
the footy and netball over
winter, but over summer
there is no sport played here.
There used to be light netball
and cricket but that went by
the wayside.
We will now have the
whole facility over that period of time, meaning that 12
months of the year there will
be something happening at
the Rec Reserve.
Mr Frawley said the club
were always on the hunt for
new players, no matter their
age or ability.

We have a really broad

range of players here which
is really great. We have a
couple of ten year olds, some
in their 20s, a few blokes in
their 40s and 50s and even
a few in their 80s. We are
always looking for new
members and everyone is
welcome.
The Bungaree Bowls Club
will commence their next
playing season in October
of this year, however an autumn competition will be
held in Ballarat over the coming months. For more information visit https://www.
facebook.com/BungareeBC.

First time gold

By Jessica Howard
A Bacchus Marsh karate
club has packed a powerful
punch at the 2016 Australian
Open.
Shindo Karate Academy
sent 28 students to Sydney
this month to participate
in the Australian Karate
Federations
nation-wide
competition.
Held on April 16, the
competition saw the club
walk away with eight gold,
four silver and five bronze
medals.

Nine-year-old St Bernards
Primary School student,
Amy Kerton competed in
the Under-9 Kumite (Sparring) Competition, where
she claimed her first national
gold medal.

Mother, Keena Kerton said

it was fantastic to see Amy
compete against kids from
all around Australia.
She was really excited; she
has won some local events

within the Victorian League

but this was a national event.
She was surprised but really
happy, she said.
Sensei Annie Noble, who
owns Shindo Karate Academy with her husband
Wayne, said the whole club
was still very excited.

We compete every year

and we always do quite well
but this year was particularly good. We came in second
on the medal tally Australian-wide, which is just great,
she said.

The team who came first

nicked us by just one medal,
however I consider ourselves
very lucky as we are one of
few teams where all our kids
are from the one club. The
team that took out the tally
is made up of two or three
clubs from different areas.
Sensei Noble said to walk
away with so many medals
was a huge credit to her husband Wayne.

He puts a lot of work into

BALLAN PLUMBING

these kids, he spends hours

on their programs and in
training and for them all
to do so well really reflects
back on that.

We are now looking towards the next national

championships in August,
which we tend to dominate
at so that is something to
look forward to.
Shindo Karate Academy
medal-winners include:
Gold:

Amy
Kerton,
Charlie
Oughtred, Emilee Attard,
Emily Thistlethwaite, Ella
Ead, Teak Grogan, Ben
DeBortoli, Max Noble.
Silver:

Bronze:

Eagles soar over Blues

It was standing room only
at Gordon when the Ballan
Blues came to play for the
Maher/Murphy Shield.
A moving tribute was held
before the Under 18 match
for past Ballan player and
Gordon parent Philip Shaw.
Tears were shed and balloons released by both junior
clubs after the sudden passing of Philip earlier in the
week. He was just 54-yearsold. Gordon held a raffle on
the gate with all proceeds
going to Phils wife Jennie
and children Kelsey, Brody
and Bailey.
The meeting of the two
clubs is always a good one
and when the senior footballers took to the field, the
first half did not disappoint.

Tensions and heated exchanges were prominent in

the first two quarters with
quite scrappy play, although
it was a man on man match
up and no player getting a
run on, until the second half
when Gordon picked up the
pace and closed the match in
the third quarter.
Mick Nolan again was the
highest goal kicker for Gordon booting five, however
seemed to be the target of a
larger opponent in several
behind the scene scuffles.
When Zac Peoples went off
with a corked thigh in the
second, his lack of presence
was certainly telling for
Ballan.
Playing coach Justin Mc-

Connell said in the rooms

after the match the team had
chances but had to improve
and I have to lift as well, my
game was not the best.
Adam Toohey was named
best on ground and held
McConnell well by playing
in front. Chris McGuigan
kicked three goals that saw
Gordon run away with the
match in the last half, after scores were level at half
time, 44 a piece. The Eagles
booted eight goals to Ballans
one goal in the last two quarters to take the four points.
James Murphy played his
100th senior game for Gordon
and celebrated with the Reserves after downing Ballan
by 21 points.

Stewart serves up a Storm

By Michael Howard
Stunning colt The Storm Inside achieved what for long
has appeared his two-yearold destiny and won the
Group 1 $322,000 Australian
Pacing Gold final at Tabcorp
Park Melton.
Emma Stewarts freak by
Rocknroll Hanover out of
Spirited Storm appeared to
do it easy, with Greg Sugars
taking the lead and clearing
out on the straight, requiring
only a flick of the reins and a
tap of the whip to claim the
mantle of Australias finest.
The race appeared in The
Storm
Insides
keeping

throughout, with Sugars

driving it to the lead from
barrier two while Weona
Sizzler took the sit on his
back.
Chris Alford temporarily put Our Little General,
Stewarts other runner, into
the breeze, but an unsettled
Three Of The Best kicked
up first time down the main
straight, looping Alford as
Gavin Lang wrestled with
the Queensland gelding.
He eventually settled in the
breeze, but there was little
respite with Geoff Webster
hooking Wrappers Delight
three-wide with almost

1000m to go and there they

remained to the final bend.
Having raced fiercely, Three
Of The Bests bid appeared
done at the final turn, on
his tail Alford and secondfavourite Our Little General
struggled to find a run while
San Domino made ground
four-wide and Weona Sizzler moved up on the pegs.
The latter two would run
into second and third, but
removed from the commotion was The Storm Inside,
who Sugars urged clear at
the turn and who advanced
to win by 6.8m in a mile rate
of 1:55.6.

Five wins twice

in a month

By Cody Winnell

For a trots trainer to produce five winners on a metropolitan card is rare.

To do it twice in one month
defies all the stats.
But Smythes Creek trainer
Emma Stewart is breaking
records and last night for
second time this month the
34-year-old geared up five

winners on the one card at

Tabcorp Park Melton.
The highlight for Stewart
was undoubtedly The Storm
Inside (Rocknroll Hanover/
Spirited Storm) winning the
$322,000 Australian Pacing
Gold Final for two-year-old
colts and geldings.
Stewart also had success
with Shadow Sax (Shadow
Play/Miss Saxony), Lovelist
