Coaching Style and Personal Ethics

Coach V had an idea for his team that they were going to win, he pushed them
to be successful.
He taught his players to never give up and to preserve through adversity.
He had a democratic and autocratic type leadership coaching style, where he
told his players what was what. However, his players were also involved in the
sense that they stepped up and became leaders themselves and took control
of their fate.
An example of this is one of his senior players kicked the assistance and
coaches out of the locker room and ripped into his teammates jolting them to
success.

Coaching Style and Personal Ethics (cont.)

Jimmy V was an extremely optimistic individual, he embodied the idea of never
give up, never surrender.
His personality radiated into his players resulting in the success of his teams
through his coaching career.
Jimmy V believed that the only true way to achieve anything was from hard work
and practice.
He wore his heart on his sleeve and his players imitated, and this ultimately lead
him to the most unpredictable runs in NCAA basketball history.

Legacy
In his 10 year coaching career at N.C. State was more than a challenge for coach
Valvano. His overall record was 209-114 while coaching the Wolfpack. Only
winning two ACC Championships. However, having that unbelieve run in his third
season to win the NCAA Title. Coach Valvano was a firm believer in chasing the
dream of a National Championship. He even made the team practice cutting
down the net once or twice a season just to practice that feeling of being a
champion. Also, coach Valvano preached on never giving up. Always believe in
yourself and your teammates.

Legacy (cont.)
1992 Jimmy Valvano was diagnosed with bone cancer. Coach Valvano fought
cancer for nine hard months before passing. Even though he lost the battle to
cancer, coach Valvano never showed any signs giving up. During his battle with
cancer he founded the Jimmy V Foundation. A Foundation that funds cancer
research across the United States. To this day the Jimmy V Foundation has
raised $130 million.
